Anyone have a loose shift lever sitting around?

heinzboehmer is the only car I’ve shifted with the autosolutions setup and it was definitely a bit too direct for me. He also mentioned that there is audible vibration noise at certain frequencies, which would irritate me to no end.

I’m trying to get this shifter to be a little closer to my old cayman 6-speed (or even the 911 7-speed). It’ll never get there, but removing ~1/2” (1/4”+ in each fwd/aft direction) of basically dead play with very little force input won’t hurt

Try the UCC dssr short shifter. Really expensive but also really close to the 997 gt3 shifter

You know you can just get the lever right? You technically don't need a full kit to make it work. The lever alone should take care of this issue for you and if you leave everything else stock, it won't be super tight and direct.

My 330i has the auto solutions in it. It also vibrates sometimes. Highly annoying. I do like the action tho. I’m not sold on the all rubber BMW feel either. Def interested in how your reinforcement mod works out.

Wjen I get my car back together you’re welcome to try a fresh AS kit experience as I have the 6 spd AS kit for the 420g box as well.

do you have an ideal feel you’re trying to replicate? Something from the P car family? I’d be happy if BMWs shifted like a good Honda manual tbh.

I hear those arguments, I’ve driven probably hundreds of BMWs with variants of shift levers. New stock parts are my favorite for this car and its use, but it seems that the rubber quality of the e46 shifter I’ve got here is just really sub-par. I’m hoping I can keep the rubber isolation so that it still feels like a passenger car and gives me just a little bit of freedom between the gates. Not looking for the rifle bolt action for this one, it’s my daily.

I could be totally wrong and this could be a complete waste of time (other than good practice on the machines) - I’ll definitely own it if there’s no difference. Plus this will cost me maybe ten bucks, honestly probably free if I have the scrap metal that I think I do.

If I could choose, I’d replicate my old ‘15 cayman GTS 6-speed. Had some springiness for cross gate shifting, good throw (longer than GT4) and had that Porsche-ness where it sucks itself fully into gear once it’s meshed. Great gearbox, shitty gear ratios..

The lever is not the main cause of the sloppiness of the e46 m3 shifters so it will only make the shift shorter but not really eliminate play
