    Is this normal?

I had another thread when BMW messed up on an oil change and ended up having to rebuild my entire motor. Everything was new except after inspection the two cams and the pistons could be reused. Everything other item was replaced and rebuilt. Everything’s been running great however today after opening the oil cap and looking inside I noticed one of the visible cam lobes had a notch out of it. I always thought cams should just be smooth. Kind of looks factory however I have no idea. Anyone thats gone into the motor can confirm this is normal that would be great. Thanks!

Thanks! I also just looked at a few Google images of used cams and I thought I found one with the same image. I appreciate putting my mind at ease.

I assume it's for machining the lobes? A withess mark or to hold it maybe. Or does it fling oil? Where's Digger?

Every lobe has one oil bucket to dump on the rocker to cool it off. Lube purpose.

Makes sense. I always thought they were smooth all the way around.

That part of the cam doesn't touch anything (well shouldn't). The gap is what you're measuring for when doing the valve clearances.
