Now you have the correct outlook. I live in a place where the closest guy I trust is 100 miles away so it is me or nothing and really that is for the best. You can buy prepackaged installs for all of the software from ebay sellers that removes the pain of figuring out the installation piece if you are not computer savvy.

You can, though I would say if you’re already committed to learning some new skills, you may as well just add the basic computer skills to that list. Having some understanding goes a long way, and also saves you money in the long run.

Agreed but simply finding the software is no longer easy depending on what you are looking for. I was looking for INPA with full the suite of SMG utilities, plus DIS, as the old links had dried up and all of the versions freely available don't have them. It was crickets from everyone who had it, or knew where to get it, as no offers to assist were made. I understand why though as then you become beholden to walking someone through virtualization (for DIS) and all that goes into that as well as how to allow DIS (if you need this for something like a VANOS test) to connect to the usb port, etc, etc, etc. I didn't need that help but others certainly will.

Yeah that's fair enough. DIS in particular is a pain to get right. I wish I could safely just host it myself.

Even with a degree in computer engineering I felt that $45 spent on an installer that gets it right and just works the first time was easily worth the time I would have spent fiddling and learning the ins and outs to get it to work

Looking to get a laptop with a serial port to run DIS, my current BMW dedicated PC just has USB.

I don't see why you need a serial port.

OK, good. My understanding was a serial port was better as the signal didn't need to be "converted" to USB and therefore was possibly more reliable.
Looks like I need to study up, but nice to know I won't need yet another computer, that would have been a bit much.

Definitely don't need a serial port, just USB and a standard K+DCAN cable (that has pins 7+8 joined like any other that works with out cars). Any laptop with windows should do. The closer to win7 the better for certain small things, but, I had DIS running vanos tests no problem using a microsoft surface pro 4 with windows 10 (using the DIS installation from the link i posted earlier).

Yeah, sometimes I can confuse people into thinking I actually know what I'm doing but in reality I can basiscally just pull codes.
I was looking for fault codes last weekend near where all the people race their cars (hondas) here in my town and multiple people said things like "...he's tuning the Bimmer, awesome.."
Maybe someday, I think the stickers and hat had them fooled.
