rock chips are caused by cars at front, and so no chip whatsoever at fast driving on open road. The worst is when behind cars that was parked on gravel driveways.

You outta try when the driveway lasts for not feet, but miles. I take it you've never driven on one of these gems.... Common in the SW US.

At least that way you won't be physically in the car when it collects the chips...

        ;-D

        Article for you Jimbo's Mhttps://marqued.com/editorial/5ukg72...ST_EMAIL_ID%5D

At this point I guess I should admit that I started buying these types of cars to leave them at homes in other states just so I didn’t have to rent cars for months at a time when I visited. And since I like vintage, analog drivers cars anyway, it was a perfect excuse. The E46M shares space with a ‘92 MB 500E, which was built by Porsche (for non drop top days). Every time I drive that car, it’s an escape pod to another era.

I drove my 24 year old 996 from Long Island NY to Key West Florida and back, 17 days 3153 miles, bucket list road trip complete, if a 996 can do it then an e46 M3 certainly can. Its all about the memories and I have tons of them. My M3 has road tripped to Virginia beach and I just took my c8 Corvette to Bar Harbor Maine this week. We all spend a lot of our time and money on these cars and the last thing I wanna do is get in some lame rental so I don't get rock chips (lol) or put miles on my cars, not putting miles on your car is like saving your girl up for the next guy to enjoy...lol

Regarding stone chips, what I'd do if I were you I'd install a 3M temporary clear bra... You can get 3M PPF on amazon and put it over the bumper and hood. It will likely look bad with air bubbles and bends but it will protect the paint for the trip. I do this on track days and long drives..

This sounds like an excellent solution for you guys/girls with perfect paint garage queens who are scared to drive your cars more than 10 miles from home.

I love road trips, so if I had the time I would definitely do it. Just give yourself some extra time to enjoy yourself along the way.

Can I ask you to briefly elaborate on this? Like what did you do for work specifically, and what aspect(s) current day commercial air travel are you not fond of?

Yes, I'm planning lots of time, no hurry whatsoever as I'm retired. I even plan on doing the speed limit........

As far as not wanting to fly, I spent my thirty-year career as an air-traffic controller, five USN, twenty-five FAA. As you can see, both federal agencies. I'll leave it at that.

All of mine have extensive "road trip" time, as each has been driven 10+ hours each way, round trip, multiple times. AmyG (S55 AMG) is an old angry bird because of it (attached from today ). As far as I'm concerned that's the fun of the game.

Hey Jimbo, after specifically reading all of your comments on this thread, from an outside view, it sounds like you're just itching to take the M! So just do it! I moved from Boston to California about a year and a half ago and I had the same intention - to drive mine across the US and make memories like so many of the guys here have been chiming in on. Unfortunately for me, my work caught up with those plans and I ended up shipping the car. Do I regret that? Not really, but then again I'm in a very different scenario – if I was retired, have enjoyed a long career in aviation and was looking for a road trip, you bet I'd be in that M3 so fast!! Go for it man, bring a camera and just have fun. Keep us updated and report on your drive!! Sounds like it'll be a great time and well worth the group photo with your HS buddies and the M3 at your reunion. All the best man! Jonathan

Thank you, Jonathan. I have already made the decision to take the M. New rotors and pads are next on the "get'er ready list"...

That's great to hear! Excited for you! I'd add any other items on there that might leave you stranded, alternator, fuel pump, front o2 sensors, check the rtabs, vanos, etc. if you haven't done so already!
