I bought one wiseco kit, then filled it with some more genuine bmw shims in the most common sizes. I also have a dozen+ used shims that then can become replacements if they're the right thickness, but only because I've done many valve adjustments at this point.

I've only performed it once but opted to buy them piecemeal from FCP, along with a couple extras in each of the sizes needed.
All the shims that were already in there, and the ones I ended up needing were between 2.00-2.24mm – which is only 7 out of 16 sizes in the Wiseco kit.
For those who have performed several adjustments is it actually common to need the other sizes in the Wiseco kit? Or are there just a bunch of sizes in there that just aren't useful?'04 LSB Coupe 6MT
All my money goes towards maintenance.

i've done a number of jobs, and it's almost always the same sized shims that I end up needing- 2.16-2.36 YMMV And, weirdly, by far, the most common used shim that I remove measures 2.19 which is actually quite useful to put into another valve.DD: /// 2011.5 Jerez/bamboo E90 M3 · DCT · Slicktop · Instagram
