    White/Green Residue flung onto Fan Shroud

    Hey folks,

    Today, I noticed a little bit of white/green dried up residue in my engine bay, which looks to have been flung onto my fan shroud from a pulley. Pictures are below. This is new, since I just detailed the engine bay last week and didn't see any spray at that time. The residue on the fan shroud is white, but the dried up residue on the pulley housing is green.

    That leads me to believe......water pump leak. But since I don't see any drips or other leaks and replacing the water pump is a rather labor-intensive job, I wanted to get some more opinions first. What do y'all think?​

      Very common. Replace your water pump with a genuine unit.

        That was the telltale sign that my pump was on its way out.

          100% the water pump.

            As other have said, a failed water pump (the shaft bearings). You'll find that impeller shaft moves excessively in the housing. Replace immediately

              It is a sign that you are leaking coolant onto a component that is turning. While the water pump IS likely that isn't always the case as it could be leaking from the thermostat housing or hoses and dripping down. I would do some more investigating with a flashlight and mirror before ordering parts.

                I had something similar recently, a very fine mist of it spraying up in the same area. Upon further inspection (I replaced my water pump w/ my HG change <5,000 miles ago) I found a pinhole puncture on my original upper radiator hose. Squeezed the hose and the hole reared its ugly face. I replaced the hose with OEM and good to go.

                  Looking more closely, I see dried up coolant right outside the bearing of the water pump, so it must be pushing past the bearing seal, being flung out of the pulley onto other things.

                  I ordered a new OEM pump, seals, and thermostat. I’ll put them all in when they arrive!

                    That's a good point. If the flung schmoo has any brownish coloring, that's more certainty its the pump. Otherwise, as you note, there could be a variety of sources.

                        I'm in the same boat. In addition to the fling of coolant, I can hear the worn bearing and was able to confirm using a mechanics stethoscope. Thankfully I wan't on the road. Going to knock it out this weekend along with the Wolfn8tor Viton ORings
