I've checked INPA on what I think the slave value is “Valve overlapping of clutch” and my value is a 2, way on the left side of the range and what google translate tells me the issue is when I fail the adaptations.

I really want to stick with the SMG and solve this tbh. I love the uniqueness and the way the SMG drives and think it's great on track too (Palmer and Lime Rock).

If you don't fix this by Christmas please let me know. I'll be in Dedham for a couple weeks in December.

Hoping it solves the problem. These type of issues are super annoying.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah is really just trying to get the light to clear. All the forums say that running the adaptation exposes ANY problem in the trans and clutch and I didn't listen and the code is unclearable without passing the adaptation, computer must store the failure and you can't move past it and I can't tolerate a light on the dash.

I've been able to clear the codes after failed adaptation. What codes are you getting that are unclearable?

It's SMG code 85. The adaptation fails and throws this code saying the adaptation failed. I can manually clear it but it comes back right away with both an engine light and a cog light. I have no other codes thrown. I manually clear it and it comes back...it's like I'm stuck in a loop of adaptation hell that I just need to complete before I can move on with my life.

If the code comes back immediately it is generally something electrical. Wiring or similar fault. As the ecu is able to ascertain immediately without even trying to run the system.

This thread seems similar to what you're experiencing?

Hi There - The first thing that INPA tries to do when running adaptations is clutch values, which means its running the slave cylinder pushing against the fork. Here the error msg from BH SMG wiki:
85 (0x55) Adaptation of the clutch
                      • Adaptation not carried out successfully
                      • correct the error displayed when the adaptation is aborted

I had a similar issue the first time i changed my clutch, when reinstalling, i did not sit the slave cylinder nipple properly in the clutch fork, when running adaptation for the first time, it bent the slave rod and it popped it out of the cylinder. To fix this, i had to remove the cylinder, magnet tool to pickup the rod, remove the retainer clip on the cylinder that holds the boot reinsert the rod and boot, put back the retainer clip with a deep socket.

                      Hope this helps.

Got the new SMG slave cylinder installed and bled and the problem still persists.

I checked that the rod is in the correct spot on the clutch fork before installing and then reinstalled after it was bled to make sure again…easier to install when there is fluid in the unit.

I was able to run both bleed procedures in INPA and passed, I ran them a few times to make sure all the air was out.

I read through that thread on m3cutters a hundred times and that's not my issue unfortunately. Since I had the trans out, I had the actuator off and cleaned/regressed the knuckle and made sure the pins were free to move. Of all the threads on this issue it seems that people just give up and manual swap it or just never post a resolution.

I think my next move is a few more bleeds, run the adaptation again and then put everything back together, see if it drives and then consult a local shop. This whole thing is extremely frustrating and I want the car back on the road.

Posting a couple screenshots from INPA and results from adaptation. I was able to select all gears and shift patterns without issue using INPA.

The only valve overlap I can think of would be in the clutch solenoid on the SMG pump. Since the solenoid is effectively opening and closing a hydraulic valve.

Another remote possibility is the SMG ECU is having issues. Not sure how to diag this though.

Interesting. Did you confirm that when you rebuilt the pump, all connectors got plugged into their proper solenoid? (You can mix them up as the plugs are all the same) And also, that you didnt mix the solenoids up?

Else, it might be the clutch solenoid that is going bad? MLR sells replacement of these.

I would start at the solenoid wiring, once that is confirmed and it fails to adapt, then pull out the solenoids to en sure they are where they need to be.

its important to mention, these are beefy solenoids and ive never seen one go bad before if it was working before rebuild it should be fine unless something happened to it while rebuilding.

also, i got photos of the solenoids and the correct wiring if you need, i can send you a PM.

                                hope this helps.
