    How Does VAT Work?

Not really an E46 specific question but with as many parts as I see everyone buy from out of the country, I figured this would be the best place. With that being said, can someone help me determine if I have to pay VAT or any extra tax? I have only purchased one thing out of the states and nothing extra was charged to me. I only say this because during my email exchange with the company they mentioned there might be extra tax I have to pay. The company wasn't 100% on it though. It is coming from the UK if that matters. Mainly just trying to prepare to pay any extra bill when FedEx drops it off.

Maybe this will shed some light on VAT.

I should probably expand my question to is there any extra tax I have to pay?

You may have to pay import duties depending on declared value. But you shouldn’t have been charged VAT on the item(s) by the exporter.

VAT is just some European mumbo jumbo that you don't have to worry about if you're not in the EU...essentially Euro sales tax on goods. You may see that on some invoices from across the pond because they are used to paying VAT, but essentially they can't tax us on those goods since we don't live there. It's like when you visit the international airports and some people bring receipts where they paid VAT while being a tourist and they can get reimbursed for those taxes if they prove they are not citizens of said country they are flying out of.

For the extra money you may have to pay: What usually happens is couriers like FedEx, DHL, etc goes ahead and pays for the custom duties, taxes, and fees so they can ensure there are no hold-ups from busy customers. For this reason you may get a bill a few weeks after delivery of an item since they covered these fees for shipment, and are essentially passing the cost down to you with the possibly of an added brokerage fee (small amount usually for admin).

For example, I paid $2347.61 USD for SS V1 headers, they were shipped by FedEx and then I received a bill from FedEx a few weeks later to the tune of $70.63 USD for the custom duties, taxes, and fees.

You will have to pay import fees and should not be charged VAT from the vendor.
Fedex will automatically either send you a bill that you pay before deliver or they will send you a bill in the mail after it is delivery to pay the import fees on the items you purchased from overseas.
