Yes, I believe I remember seeing this posted. I don’t think this is indicative of polyurethane couplers being unsafe.
I’m not an engineer, so I can’t give my own findings. But I did enough reading about polyurethane vs rubber and in what I read it sided heavily on the poly being stronger, less resistant to tearing etc. The only downside I could find was that it would send more vibration through. But that’s what I wanted anyway, so it was a good thing.

The factory rubber part has woven belts inside to prevent over straining and catastrophic failure in the event of rubber failure. I would remove the urethane part asap if it were my car.

I have been running a solid coupler for some time now. Though it's not ideal, as it puts some strain on the steering rack, I want to replace it.
I just got a shaft with two joints from fuller, at €133 with shipping it's not that bad. May post an Update in a month or two when I get this delivered and installed.

BMW e46 slim steering shaft for clearance of downpipe or turbo manifold, perfect for engine swapped cars! Also deletes the original rubber bushing for better steering response. These are custome made in house so please allow up to 7 days for dispatch, if you need one quickly please contact us to see if we have any in s

A client with an E28 had a poly coupler (probably from IE as he had bought a bunch of stuff from them in the past) and it failed causing him to lose all steering. Luckily he was pulling into his turning into his neighborhood, so he was able to quickly stop it, but it could have been very bad.

100% of the time...Poly is trash. It is basically made from recycled milk containers...lol...might not be true.

To clarify… Are you running the Fuller steering now? Or you ordered in to replace your current setup?

I have just ordered it. So no, I can't yet give any feedback on how it is.
