    M5 SMG on E46 M3?

    Hey Fellas,

    I may have heard this in passing, but do people put the E60 M5 SMG pump into our cars? If so, whats the benefit? Any coding involved, etc?

    Crazy enough, my last E46 M3 had an E60 M5 SMG pump. Got it tested and it pressurized fine and shifted normally. I was never 100% about it though because I just like things original but didn’t care enough to spend money to change it. Friend of mine said it’ll be more durable because it’s coming from a more powerful car but I have no data to back that up.

      Irrelevant really, all the pump does is pressurise the hydraulic system.

      Maybe if that particular car would be changing gears significantly more often a pump might be designed for a higher duty cycle, but an E60 M5 is not going to be significantly different in that regard.

          An SMG unit is just some solenoids, electric motor, couple sensors, a reservoir, accumulator and a bunch of o-rings/seals. I guess it's possible BMW "beefed" up something (larger accumulator?, you can already buy those from MLR) but I don't really see what could be significantly "better" particularly if it costs more. I took a look at some pics of an e60 m5 SMG unit, looks like the same stuff I listed but laid out differently.

                Didn’t notice any difference, shifted normally. Nothing better or worse. Here’s a picture showing it pressurized ok. Don’t think there was any coding involved either. My mechanic would’ve mentioned if there was.

                  The pressure is regulated. So a bigger pump at best just pressurises faster. The stop pressure will be the same. The pump is not directly involved in changing gears. In fact when pressurised you'll get a number of gear changes without the pump running at all. So no it won't make a difference.
