Starter isn't being a very good starter

Just curious, remove/replace starter at the engine bay, or wokring under the tranny?

At the engine bay. You can't get at it from under the transmission like on a non-m e46. It's pretty easy to get at, just pull out the airbox and it's right there. The hardest part is getting at the two bolts on the back side of the transmission, using a closed-end box torx wrench is helpful as there isn't a lot of room to get a socket back there.
