A suitable alternative to the OX187D is this Hengst filter:

      Rockauto has OX187D for $7.83 each. I order 12 at a time.

$7.83 is basically the price difference from when I last purchased from FCP (including my shipping back to them). Looks like Rockauto for me.

Yup, I have a whole box of them, they don’t go bad over time, and I don’t have to order an oil filter each time I want to do an oil change.

In case someone really wants the Mahle 187, but doesn't want to buy from Rock auto as they also want to buy other BMW parts, AZautohaus, OEMbimmerparts and RMeuropean are 3 popular BMW parts sites that have the Mahle 187 for about $8-10. And if you're getting other parts, you might get free shipping.

Darn it, just did oil and filter yesterday and was unaware of the Mahle filter change. They did look the same size and it fit in fine.

Here's a good alternative - I use this brand on my non-M and it seems very high quality.

IMO, the important aspect is if it is a quality filter (which MAHLE filters are) and that they get changed with each oil service. I've seen one or two DIYs where owners use the MANN S54 filter without issue. I believe Hengst is used on a few Mercedes as OE.

The stuff to avoid is WIX and other generic filters. I have seen one WIX S54 filter where the pleats had collapsed.

Thanks. The 187s seem available elsewhere - is it worth the mess to get one and replace?

Glad I saw this as it corroborates why my FCP filters don't have the cardboard band around them anymore. To me, that's the biggest difference I see between these filters.

I seem to recall someone saying those were added due to the thick 10W60 blowing filter media apart in cold weather, but I'm unsure how true that is.

I dont understand why this is being made into such a big deal. I just looked at both MAHLE filters from the above link and they look pretty much alike (running the OX68D right now). I would even run the XENST one as they are OE for VAG group vehicles. Just get the Genuine BMW one if it bothers you that much or the OX187D from other sites.

FYI the OX 68 does have the sleeve.

I had a 187 in stock from a while back and mistakenly ordered the 68 because I ordered from FCP. The 68 I ordered did not have the band around the pleats, I figured that it is there to prevent collapse due to the high rpm/flow and thick oil, so the 187 went in yesterday and the 68 will go in some other car. Another data point I suppose.

I bought a bunch of 187s on RockAuto, probably enough to last as long as I'll have the car. I do have a 68 due to a 187 warranty exchange from FCP. I'd run if need be.
