Is my steering rack bad (video)

Trying to diagnose a steering issue I've been having. When running over a bump with the left front tire, I would get a violent shake in the steering wheel. This didn't happen with the right. So far I've replaced the left front shock, which was totally shot. The inner and outer tie rods seem to be in good shape, not loose at all. When checking out the tie rods, I tried playing with the rack itself and noticed some movement. I'm wondering if this is normal?

That looks like too much play IMO and probably needs replacement.

      Appreciate the tag!

100% way too much play. That steering rack should not move at all because the pinion shaft and steering rack teeth have such a tight tolerance that they’re holding each other stiff.

Tighten the steering lock on the backside of the rack (approximately 20NM). There should be no movement like you’re seeing when adjusting the inner tie rods… if you still have lots of play after tightening the steering rack lock (the 12-point locking nut on yellow tags, the hex lock on others) then you probably have a damaged pinion shaft and/or really worn steering rack teeth.

Ok thanks, I'll give that a shot! Just to confirm, the hex lock (I have a green tag rack) is on the bottom of the splined steering shaft?

You'll want to tighten the hex lock on the opposite side of the steering rack from the green tag. It will be on the "rear" of the steering rack, not on the bottom of the pinion shaft.

The hex lock on the underside of the pinion shaft should be 70NM + 5, so not a bad idea to check that and make sure it's tight. There is another hex nut on the inside that secures the pinion shaft within the rack but no need to touch that yet.
