I'd argue the S65 a little less maintenance intensive since there are no valve adjustments and doesn't have the complex VANOS issues. There are other relative simple to fix issues...they just cost a lot more.
I've thought about whording S54s...with all of the swaps going on I think motors are going to be $$$ in the future. Since 2016-2019, these motors have gone from about $2500-$3000 to about $4000 for a motor in similar condition.
But, I agree not being more complex, but a lot more work and a lot less space. That's how I felt working on my s85.

The S65 is a PIA. I was a doing a valve cover gasket on the pass side. I was backing out the back corner nut and the ratchet got wedged against the AC line. But I couldn't get the nut back on. So I had to lower the engine to get the tool out. It's a weird place because I couldn't get a short socket or a flex joint in there.
Let's not mention all the hoses on the front of the front subframe. Sorting them out after a rod bearing job took as long as doing the damned rod bearings!

Wow this thread took a much different turn than I expected haha
I find it amazing how emotionally charged some people can get on a public forum, and actually suggest that people should get hurt for expressing their opinions. It’s ok to disagree. But to suggest harm on someone is just outrageous. As Rogan says, never read the comments haha06 IB M3 ZCP
