For the gear position sensor (GPS), this diagram is actually misleading/incorrect. The gear ID switch (part 12) and the locking pin/thrust pin/spring combo (parts 8/9/10) all go into the same hole which is the one that you tap threads into. Whereas this diagram shows them going into different holes. The hole that the GPS is going into on this diagram does not exist. The thrust pin (10) is what pushes the gear position sensor in when you're in gear, so they all need to go in the same place. It really bothered me when doing this job that this diagram was wrong lol.

I also meant the Gear ID switch, is there anything inside or is that require just the tap? (stupid questions sorry)

I know the position sensor has a different spring and pin in that inlet, aside from this, is there anything else I should change?
* odd/even shifter shaft detent: 23317511337
* Reverse detent: 23111222720
* 5/6 gear detent: 23311228393
There is no position sensor in 6mt; only the SMG has 3 sensors: slave clutch, shift shaft linear (odd/even gears) sensor and angular sensor (R, 1/2, 3/4. 5/6 planes).

Bell housing machining: The stock manual box used 2 C-clips and rubber caps to hold the Reverse and 5/6 gears detent pins. Machining the grooves for the C-clips is not easy and people had tapped threads for 2 bolts instead (some used the NPT plug bolts which I think could crack the thin and soft aluminum female threads) . I found the following method is good and looks nice. I wish to give credit to the creator but I forgot where I got it.
Detent Cap: An M22 thread is tapped into the detent hole where an OE E46 M3 differential drain plug is used instead of the original Getrag manual transmission rubber cap and circlip. This is done for ease of install and final aesthetics. The rubber caps are fragile and often get torn or bent in the process. The differential drain plug is a perfect fit and has the correct depth for proper detent spring compression.

So people prefer to use the SMG shifter bolt over the 6mt shifter clip/rod for a more solid mount? I thought the bolt was used bc SMG shifter mounted rigidly while the 6mt needs clip/rod for a little movement freedom from the shifter as the latter anchored to chassis.
Edited: the SMG bolt/nut will destroy the rubber bushing of the 6mt shifter arm due to its rough threads. The stock clip/rod has smooth surface acts as bearing.Last edited by sapote; 11-27-2020, 03:56 PM.

I'll mess with my coil spring next time my transmission is out. Mine is an original 6 speed manual though. Mayne the thing has worn over time, but I can't imagine it wasn't bent correctly at the factory.

Do the SMG cars came with the clutch pedal stop buffer #35316750569 already installed? I don't see it listed on the required parts on first post.

There was no slop between the transmission and shifter carrier even with the regular pin. There's still about 10mm of side to side play in my shifter.
I've basically given up now and am pretty certain that all the slop that's left is internal to the transmission. Looking at pictures of the bellhousing, there seem to be gaps between the detent bearing and the detent pins, which is potentially the source of the slop. At this point I'm just planning on swapping in an E92 335 transmission whenever I've run out of other things to do.
(Rant over) I you've got slop in that connection though, the SMG bolt thing might be worth doing. It'll also get rid of that stupid pin lol.

How is this measured and is there a spec for it? It hasn't been run long so I might give it a try if I can track down shims.

Do anyone know what is this Torx screw for? It was listed on the original post.Edited: It is located on top of the gear box but I don't know what's for. on this diagram: S6s420g inner gear shifting partsTorx Screw, micro-encapsulated M8x25 GetBMWParts 23317586637
