What goes into an OE remanufactured engine PN 11000304349?

With the replacement cost of a set of 24 springs, upper and lower spring plates, rockers and 48 keepers being $4,000, what all goes into a factory reman S54? It seems that a reman for 15K is short money if all of those components are new, alongside the timing system, VANOS, pistons, etc.

Anyone have the skinny on what they actually replace at the factory? I assume it's a contract manufacturer that does these rebuilds, but does anyone know who actually does the rebuilds and what the quality is?

    Taken from another forum:

BMW Re-manufactured engines are not engines that simply had the faulty parts replaced.

One of my company's largest clients is BMW Financial Services as I work in the automotive wholesale business, where we sell their company cars.

Even their company cars have catastrophic engine failures from time to time and we install BMW re-manufactured engines in their cars before we sell them-straight from the factory, so I am thoroughly aware of how their re manufactured process works.

These engines are broken down and only undamaged components are assessed and every part goes through a thorough reapplication process including measured tolerances and honing if necessary... All the seals, including piston rings, bearings, gears, chains are new and even the block is stripped, cleaned, and repainted.

Ask any engine builder and they will tell you that this is essentially a new engine.

I fully trust that this engine was re-manufactured with likely more precision and a higher quality control standard than that of the original engine that came off the assembly line.
BMW reman parts are usually new. They label them as reman and require core charges for tax reasons (reman parts require less duty than new parts)

Well the BMW short block is more dressed than other manufacturers short block.

It comes with crank and cam sensors, new VANOS, new water pump, if you price it all out it’s definitely not a bad deal.

In essence you bring your own headers, wiring harness, throttle bodies, intake etc.

BMW refers to it as a "short engine" which we would generally call a long block. It comes valve cover to oil pan, oil filter housing, water pump and thermostat.

Yeah typically a "short block" or short engine would not include the head.

I saw this pic on a couple websites ad figured it was an actual short block.

However I do see a pic of a complete engine including the head on other sites, so if you guys say it's the full engine I'll take your word for it

BMW does not sell an assembled short block (block, crank, pistons, etc). You can only buy it as individual pieces or a "short engine" which is what Americans (maybe others?) would call a long block. *There are many instances with other engines in the lineup needing a block and we would have to disassemble the original and swap all components to the new block, an assembled short block would have been very welcomed in that scenario lol

As far as what parts they use I cannot say with 100% certainty but AFAIK all of the engines a remanufactured, there are no "new" engines left. So I would assume the block, crank and head have been in service before. I would expect the rods, pistons, cams, valve train, oil pump, waterpump, vanos are all new as if you were to buy them out of the catalog over the counter.

If installed in an E46 M3 it should come with a warranty too.

Interesting thing about the cylinder head is TIS says that they should not be resurfaced and to install it by just cleaning off the old gasket material. I wonder what their method is for installing a new headgasket with a used cylinder head.

Could be a new head then?

Only someone who has ordered one would know as they can look at the date stamp.

Edit: Maybe it can be spotted in the images below lol

Its been 13+ yrs since I personally installed a new one, lol

I wouldn't be surprised if they use a reman head on occasion though.
