Good point, rebuilds are 15k here as well, and you need to do most of the labour yourself and the risks are, not many shops are familiar with them

i got a proper quote today

Are you anywhere close to Brintech Customs? Those dudes seem to know what they're doing.

But they're probably going to be close to $15k anyway. I don't think they are replacing every part that the OE reman does.

List prices can fluctuate dramatically for these BMW remans based on supply. At one point, an S65 reman was $12k. An N63 reman during the recalls were about $4k. Might be work keeping an eye on it if you're looking for a spare. I check a couple of part numbers once in awhile on getbmwparts.com. This includes transmissions, rear diffs, and anything else that is reman'd.

I'm more saying I would buy the engine from BMW, but might consider having the brintech guys do the work (assuming they are legit). However, that might kill any warranty offered, so there's that.

            Makes sense...I'm always thinking DIY.

Not sure about outside of the US, but you should be able to get it warrantied as long as you can prove the BMW procedure was followed. For example, if the BMW procedure specs a bolt to be replaced, then you have to make sure you have an invoice for a BMW bolt with the correct part number. For example, a dealer that does an N63 oil consumption warranty claim (not class action) - they have to turn in all of the old parts - bolts, gaskets, etc or BMWNA can deny the claim and stick it to the dealer.

It comes down to how good the service department is - specifically the shop foreman's knowledge. There are some that don't know their head from their ass...so you know how that will go. In some cases you get one that is competent. The risk to the dealership is if they warranty the part, BMWNA does an audit and they could reject the warranty coverage and then the dealership is holding the bag. And depending on how badly your dealership has abused BMW's warranty process - there is a good chance that a high dollar warranty claim gets audited.

It's a question that I would recommend asking if you do buy a BMW reman anything.
