Interest in a carbon fiber roof group buy?

I added up the costs and good news! I can lower the price.

5 roofs - $800 each plus shipping
- 3k 1x1 plain weave - same as the CSL roof
- 12k 1x1 weave on the bottom (the individual threads or tows are a little bigger)
- Final weight will come in around 6.75 lbs +/- .25lb
- I can do something custom - will cost extra - which can include a 2x2 weave, spread tow, make it stiffer by adding a layer
- Must be a forum member with a couple of posts to participate

The goal is to get the roofs in everyone's hands 30 days after I receive all of the deposits.

If we can get to 10, price drops to $700 per roof.

not sure why people would cheap and get a garage made ''carbon fiber'' roof for a such important structural part of the chassis..... don't cheap on parts.

I mean... isnt stock slicktop is just a stamped piece of sheet metal? It still has to have the center brace. Worst case scenario your coupe turns into a 'vert with a "garage made" cf roof.

Because this is how CF parts are made, in garages, by hand, in a mold, just like this. Fit and finish is obviously TBD, but it's not the facility that determines the end result, it's the guy laying it. You don't need an autoclave to build a strong part.

So, it seems like a very reasonable wager to support a local forum member, for a cf roof solution.

An airbox, on the other hand, is quite complex, but there is Karb for that.

How dense are you? He prefaced this with the fact that there will be defects, that these parts are meant for racecars and that they are built with that being in mind. The roof is barely a structural piece and he mentioned that this would be best for cars with cages. Take your opinion somewhere else

Ok...just what I thought...garages are off limits for curation activities. I made a rejected part and listed it for sale cheap, I think it was an E9X M3 front panel. It was about 1/4 of what I would normally charge someone. He bought it to make more, he was clear about that. No issues here, I copied an OEM part so kind of hypocritical to criticize on my end although I did make some smartass comments because...I am me! I honestly didn't understand why he wanted it. I think ECS is selling them for $1100...not really worth it if you ask me.

Previously, I listed rejected parts for a week or two before they hit the trash. Typically it would be locals that buy it knowing what was wrong with it. If I listed it for $100, I'd take $50 when they showed up. I recover some of the loss and someone walks away happy. Now, I do destructive testing on rejects. If I can't break it I saw it into pieces.

I WANT TO REITERATE - IF CARS AND COFFEE IS YOUR GOAL...I'M NOT THE GUY!

Full disclosure - I'm making about $250 per roof for my time which isn't very much even for working out of my garage. I'm funding a foldable cutting/layup table and an oven.

If I can fund my table/oven, do something I enjoy, and make someone happy...then I think that's a win-win. I've taken a lot from this community and I'm always happy to give back.

Don't worry...I can still find a way to fuck up a roof! lol

Actually, any sharp curve presents a challenge. The fabric has to be tight into any corners and carbon does not like sharp corners. Still, it is a relatively easy and quick part to make. I can layup, bag, infuse and trim a roof in the same time it takes to do a pair of headlight blanks.

Also, if you really want to nerd out, I can set you up with a way to wirelessly monitor and log temps, in as many locations across the panel as you'd like during curing.

I am designing an oven, I'll hit you up when I get closer to that part. I would like to be able to post cure parts for higher thermal stability.
