Why would someone use Mobil 1 for MTF ?

Previous owner logged an entry for changing trans fluid to Mobil 1. Now that I have a new, super quiet and smooth engine, I have a lot of noise from the trans. Clutch is brand new.

I was considering switching back to the Pentosin OEM stuff. But is there something I should know about why a person would go to Mobil 1? FWIW, trans has about 52k miles.

    Thanks!

Searching does not show a Mobile 1 MTF. They do make an ATF. Some people say that ATF in this gearbox helps with cold 1-2 shifts, but I can't imagine it is good for the gearbox longterm as ATF is not a GL4 fluid. Pentosin MTF-LT-2 tends to cost a bit more than most ATFs off the shelf. I would drain it and replace with MTF-LT-2.

The power steering system does takes ATF.

Thank you for the help. I will go ahead with the replacement.

There is no more pentosin mtf2, it's been replaced by their dct fluid (ff4?) Anyway, it feels great. You probably can still find oe bmw mtf lt2, but the cost isn't worth it or maybe it's only around in 5L jugs now I can't remember. There are other 75w gl4 lubes out there. Stat away from the heavier (75w90) gl5 fluids that are commonplace nowadays.

Has anyone tried the DCT-F in a manual transmission?

GL5 lubes have friction modifiers that will don't work wll with your synchros. You want a GL4 fluid designed for a manual transmission. I've used Redline MTL. You have to change it a lot. The OE fluid would be ideal.

How often do folks change OEM fluid on the manual?

It is considered lifetime, but every other diff fluid change so 60k should be good. It honestly does not shift any better with new OE fluid.

I use Ravenol MTF-2 in my Z4M and it shifts better than old OE fluid at least.

When I bought the car about eight years ago the fluid had not been serviced in quite a while so I changed it using OEM Pentosin. I noticed no improvement in feel. I changed it again this past August (OEM Pentosin - 27k miles since the last change) and I did notice a slight improvement in feel. Now, this was not a huge improvement, but it was noticeable and I was a bit surprised by it.

Out of curiosity, how many track days should I expect out of the Pentosin?

When I replaced mine, it felt slightly better for 100 miles, then back to the old Getrag feel.

My guess is you cut the service interval in half for a track only car. At that rate, you can probably use something that does not cost as much, such as Ravenol MTF2. Once FCP stops carrying BMW MTFLT2 (rebranded Pentosin), will most likely go with Ravenol.

I have the transmission out of my M6 and am going down the rabbit hole of MTF-LT2 vs. FFL-4 vs. Redline etc. as I'd like to do a fluid change as part of the overhaul.

Might just go MTF-LT2 instead of the new stuff.
I do have some Redline lying around and heard good things but have also constantly read that Redline can cause increased syncro wear.
Hard to know what to do so maybe OEM is the way..

Redline won’t cause synchro wear, as long as you mean MTL or MT-LV. I don’t think D4 ATF should be used in any MT even though people do since it lacks the friction modifiers necessary for synchros. FFL-4 should be a fine substitute for LT2, it just also has DCT wet clutch additives you don’t need. I went with Ravenol MTF-2 which is their version of MTF-LT-2. It has better specs on paper than most, while retaining nearly identical KV100 to the OE fluid. I like the high viscosity index in particular which could possibly make it less notchy at low temps if you’re in a cold climate.

If you want to use the Redline you have that’s cool but note that MTL is much thicker than OE fluid. To get original viscosity you need to mix something like 3/4ths MT-LV and 1/4th MTL (rough guess didn’t calculate it). There’s no problem with the thicker MTL other than it might be tough when cold though. The Redline or Motul DCTF can work also.
