    Money shift?

Hit a 3-2 shift going for 3-4 last night. Was not at the top of third but probably more than half way there. Definitely saw at least 9k for half a second but no immediate catastrophic damage. Sounds and drives fine. About to 2k miles on current rod bearings.

How much can these motors take in that situation?

Haven't had a chance to fire up ISTA but I'm told there is a max rpm reached function in the service menu.

rpm limit function won't do anything when the engine was driven by the wheels.

If there is no backfire into intake or exhaust, then no bent valves yet.

DME does store a value for the max rpm reached. If you want a (small) project and have an Android phone lying around, this thing can read it: https://github.com/uholeschak/ediaba...BMW_and_VAG.md . Haven't personally tried with ISTA, but that might do it too.

However, be prepared to find a huge value stored in there. My car reads out ~8500 rpm as max rpm reached after a fresh full DME flash (counter cleared) and a couple trips to redline (no money shifts). Engine is either hitting those values momentarily when upshifting or there are some interesting interpolation effects influencing the value.

If you didn't hear a bang, clanking or a loss of power - then you probably ducked the bullet. I'd still do a Blackstone soon - but that's just me.

(I have instructed in an E46 that money-shifted on track. It was noisy with immediate 80+% loss of power).

If your engine survives the next 50 hours then it’s probably fine. I accidentally took my car to at least 9k rpm at the track in 2015, and it’s still healthy per blackstone oil analyses.

For comparison, 997 GT3 redlines at 8400 RPM. Overrevs in ranges 1-3 are totally fine and would not void warranty. Range 4 is considered okay as well, especially if many hours have passed since the over rev. Ranges 5-6 are no bueno, with 6 likely causing catastrophic engine damage. Once I learned this, I felt much less terrible about over revving the M3 lol.
          Range 1: 9000-9200 RPM
          Range 2: 9200-9400 RPM
          Range 3: 9400-9600 RPM
          Range 4: 9600-10000 RPM
          Range 5: 10000-11000 RPM
Range 6: 11000 and up RPM

Great info. Always wondered about the P car overrevs.

If the car is running fine, you're G2G. Wouldn't sweat it.

So ChatGPT figured out where to get the max rpm value with the tools I have in about 0.0000002 seconds.

It went through all the options and quickly narrowed to Tool32 and Martyns msslogger although with the latter you have to fool around with python. The AI also offered to help write the script.

I've never even opened Tool32 but it gave me detailed instructions on how to load the mss54 program and what job names to look out for. Found what I was looking for under status_nmax.

It returned 9229. Guess I'm feeling somewhat better however the AI somewhat scolded me for a severe overrev and told me to take more care shifting in the future 🤣

Tool32 also has status_vmax if anyone is looking for their top speed ever.

I was feeling amazing about how fast I was on track when I read that out on my car and saw ~170 mph.

Until I realized that 170 mph is top of fifth...and the car has been on the dyno a few times

If it's driving fine, you're probably fine. It's piston to valve contact you really have to worry about in a money shift, and you'd know about that by now.

"Was not at the top of third but probably more than half way there"

-- half of 3rd = 50 mph ~=5700 rpm in 2nd. Seems like you had quite a bit of buffer yet to go...
