Do oil extractors work on our cars?

I have tried both the compressor based and pump handle based oil extractors with not much luck. I can get about 2 liters of oil out and then it seems to stop.

Are the e46 M3 dipsticks just not compatible with this process or the engine sump?

I use one all the time on all vehicles. Push all the way down till it stops, then back off about 1/4”

A forum member made this video showing how to use an extractor:

I'm contemplating giving the extractor method a go as well. But, getting under the car, I can look for other things that might be wrong, so the up-in-the-air method has merit.

I do it with the extractor and works great. It draws almost all.

How long does the extract take?

Anyone else using the Mityvac 7201 2.3 Gallon Fluid Evacuator Extractor and Dispensing Pump ?

Do you use the small hose and plug it into the larger hose that attaches to the base unit?

Yes. Watch the video if you're unsure how to use it

some questions for those who use this method. why is this your preferred method over traditional?

can't get the car flat or level enough in the garage? issue with drain plug or like the idea of not having to worry about ever replacing crush washers or cross-threading? is this method better at getting more oil out of the car?

do you warm up the car a little bit to get the oil less viscous, or not necessary with this method?

my driveway is an incline so I just reverse into the driveway and drive onto some race ramps making the car level or flat with almost the nose slightly pointing down which is the only upside to the driveway, i still wish it was flat.

I’ve been using the Holt one from harbor freight for 4 years now np. It will suck out 99% of the oil. My drive way is at a 2-3 degree angle

Just convenience, time and not getting dirty.

can change the oil and filter in like 10 minutes as opposed to 30-45 minutes which includes getting the car up on Jack stands etc. cleanup is a breeze too since it sucks into the pump and you can pour it into your favorite container later.

I'm going back to an extractor. If you warm up the oil you can get all of the oil. I did this on my 04 330Ci and then removed the drain plug - got a couple of drips. That's it.
