Probably just a bad seal on the cap?

If it only comes on when the tank has 1/3 of a tank or more of gas, it's probably the EVAP purge valve. Other than it being UNDER the intake manifold, it's easy to change and isn't expensive.

I recently had a CEL for this and I replaced the cap with a new one and all was good.

Replaced purge valve - didn't help , changed gas cap - still nothing . Finally found time to inspect the car and I found it , the F connector was rusty and broke . It's located behind rear passenger fender line.

Obioban Nate047 just tagging you guys as a follow up from my thread and to see this guys problem that came up from this exact piece - this will continue to be an issue as these cars get older. Maybe worth adding to a high mileage maintenance list? 006/346246-psa-east-coast-cars-check-your-fuel-evap-y-pipe

OP I’m glad you found this and got it solved! Just found mine before it cracked and glad I got it replaced. Edit: also, where are you located? Just curious if your car experiences winter

Got it, so similar to mine that lived the majority of its life in NY and MA. Not going to be surprised if we start seeing a bunch of these posts soon and these pieces start flying off shelves!

My old PY car had the same "gas cap" light, but that metal part above that kermmmit7 had rushed was fine. My car has no rust anywhere. After smoke testing, I found smoke leaking down the side of the gas tank. @#$#$%. Didn't see anything through the top access holes either. I dropped the fuel tank and found that one of the plastic evap hoses had worn a hole through it, right where the hose turned and went through the passage way through the frame. The tiny hole was in the corrugated part, so I couldn't just cut out the bad part and add a hose joiner. I ended up replacing the whole evap hose (which comes in a bundle), thankfully, BMW still stocked it...at a cost of $250...

An absolute huge amount of work for a pin-hole-sized plastic hose in a stupid place you can't reach.
