IMO, quickest and most cost effective option is to find a pulled, tested working, sub-100k mile engine. Replace bearings, upper chain guide, redrill VANOS oil pump disc and check cam bolts and add a headgasket if engine has more than 100k miles.
I'm in SoCal (Orange County)... I originally called a couple of racing shops and got a few quotes. They were around $18K which was more than I paid for the car back in 2012.
I understand one can purchase a rebuilt motor like this: https://www.rogueengineering.com/USE...nes_p_305.html

But by the time you pay someone to swap it out... back at that $18K mark.

Then there's the "cheaper, riskier path" like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/11678066775...Bk9SR8LnhtKsZg

$5500 shipped, but still need to swap out parts (I have a complete rebuilt VANOS on mine) and do the rod bearings ($1200-ish?). That's probably around $9,200 which isn't _too_ bad...

Just trying to see what my options are. I used to wrench on these cars quite a bit (fixed an old E36 w/M54 that had blown a head gasket and redid all the suspension on it) but now I have work and family obligations taking up most of my spare time.

Sounds like for you that would be the.... logical conclusion, lol

I believe Anri does, but if you are paying him to do it then it doesn't really matter to you as its his responsibility and if you trust him to build it then you've trusted him to pick the right machine shop.

          Hi Bavarian,

All the machining is done by personally me and no one else, that way errors
are down to none/zero and the specs are all under control. That way if something goes "Boom"
we don't point fingers at the sublet/parts to X machine shop and how other/most BMW shops operate.

That is why I have 2-Years Unlimited miles warranty for my work.

I put a lot of pride in my work, this isn't just a customer #2947380502 it's
          friendship.

If you don't mind, follow me in instagram for some cool stuff here https://www.instagram.com/euroclassicmotors/

I am working on very unique S54 stroker kit at present, I made some really nice propriatery changes to the OEM
crank design, soon for offer to people.

From worlds 1st Double Vanos S14/S38 all the way to balls out S54 stoker I have it all.

          Regards,
          Anri

There's a guy on FB e46 m3 group that sells them regularly and for relatively cheap out of NY, usually 35-4500 depending on mileage. Not sure what shipping would be, but I'm always tempted to pick one up.

Anthony Doring i believe, not sure on spelling, but itโ€™s close enough
