My understanding, correct me if I am wrong, is that cam lobe and follower wear will cause the valve clearance to increase while valve and valve seat wear will cause it to decrease. The only other thing that might happen is the valve springs sag and valve clearance increases. Maybe bouncing an engine with deferred maintenance off the limiter caused some of the valve train components to settle in, a lot. All you can do now is monitor it IMO.

Were both of the cylinder 6 exhaust valves that far off or just the one? And was it the only real outlier that jumped so much? I'm wondering if maybe one valve isn't closing fully.
The compression test will be interesting, if you can do a leak down test also that would be good. If it is a valve not closing, you'd probably be able to hear it through the exhaust on the leak down test.

the last one was 2.62 the one right before was 2.42 both jumped from 2.18 and 2.22 respectively every valve was off... incrementally from cylinder 1 -> 6 increasing in shim size and gap needed to fill.Originally posted by Barracooda View PostWere both of the cylinder 6 exhaust valves that far off or just the one? i gotta wait till the weekend to do compression test but will report back. but as of right now, i'm guessing everything is fine cuz that engine sounds really good. This is one of those stories with the truth is stranger than fiction. w/o povenance we can only back speculate what's going on here.

Loud ticking can also come from oil starvation, even if only momentary
How quickly does the oil pressure light comes off at engine start ? Maybe your oil pump has a hard time building up pressure, leading to excessive wear.
This part had me think of that :

No idea if it is related or not, but your loud ticking sound made me think of this2004 E46 M3 • TiAG / LSB nappa

yeah I hadn't timed the oil pressure light but nothing seems out of the ordinary after i re-shimmed everything. before i did it, it was really really loud.
here's an audio recording i have of it. -
I don't have a recording of it now, but its just the injector sound with a little bit of valve noise but the sharp tick is completely gone.

Compression test results. - 180-high 190s. I’m pretty sure it’s actually all high 190s. I noticed the starter was starting a little weak so plugged it into my 100amp programming booster and it went from 180s to 190s.
cylinder 6 was strong as all the other cylinder.
as far as I can tell it’s a healthy engine. Just pretty wild that the exhaust shim needed to get up to 2.621 Photo
