Hi guys,
2001 BMW M3 6SPD
recent started noticing that my car has developed a bit of a rattle on cold start and goes away completely after around a minute of driving.
I will turn the car on, wait maybe a minute or two to get my music/nav going before heading out, then when i do go, at around 2k rpm I will get a metallic rattle sound from I think the engine area. I make sure to go easy on the throttle until the oil gets up to temp but it will still rattle. After around a minute of driving though it will go away and not come back until the car is cold again. This will happen in gear or revving at idle.
Ive changed out the timing chain tensioner thinking maybe its oil pressure based (and it has been on the car for 140k miles so couldnt hurt to replace) but didnt seem to help. Rod bearings (OEM) and VANOS (BEISAN) have been addressed at 120k miles (car is at 140k now). Its hard to get a good recording of the sound but I’ll try to get some and post it when i can. I attached the best i have so far.
TIA!
