    Quiet Lightweight Flywheel?

Anybody have a lightened flywheel setup that doesn't chatter like hell? What is it?

I love the feel of a light flywheel on takeoff. Not looking for more power or even faster throttle response, really. Just want it nice and light pulling away and during shifts.

Had one in my e36 M3 and it was great and made minimal noise with the right fluid. Hoping theres a setup for this car that won't sound like marbles in a coffee can.

Unfortunately that's the way this car was designed, it's meant to have a dual mass flywheel... as soon as you go to a single mass, you're going to get chatter, it's just the nature of the beast.

My ACT is pretty decent, and there's days where it's not even loud. But, then again, there's days where it's pretty loud.

I think it depends on how hot it is, the angle the car is at, and possibly other factors.

is there a lighter dual mass option?

or can you shave off material from the stock unit? that’s what we used to do on the japanese cars back in the day. I think I got 4-6lbs shaved off of my 240sx flywheel when I replaced the clutch.

On my Honda I had SPEC make me a custom billet aluminum pressure plate to shave LBs.

I'm not aware of a lightweight dual mass flywheel

No idea who does that. Not sure I would trust it. A single mass is probably a lot harder to screw up.

A Superdamper might fix it the chatter, but I don't think it's worth another thousand dollars.

Hoping someone has found a lighter single mass combo that somehow isn't noisy 🤞🏼

I told you my ACT is pretty quiet. I went with ACT cause I've run them for 20+ years and never had an issue, but I feel like I'm one of the only people on this forum running ACT, so you probably won't hear anyone else recommend them.

Per ACT - "Noticeably improved engine response and acceleration, OE to mild gear rattle"

I would say that's accurate... most of the time it's pretty silent, but sometimes at a stoplight on a hot day you can hear it complaining.

"Note: Single mass flywheel conversion. Can be used with both factory clutch kit and ACT clutch kits. Gear rattle is expected. Flywheel bolts included (M12-1.5 x 30mm)."

I think most any shop that resurfaces flywheels will do it. If I remember right they just removed some extra material from the outer part of the flywheel where the clutch doesn't contact....but that was like 25 years ago. I had a little bit of rattle in neutral, but nothing that bothered a 20yo.

                  I'm intrigued.

My use case is street but low miles and I like race car noises within reason. Do you feel it's a worthwhile improvement for the cost? Would you do it again?

I did my single mass flywheel when the car was still a daily (some 11 years ago). With stock tranny mounts and full interior it's not too bad. I am on a clutchmasters kit.

There are a few steel flywheels that are closer to 20 lbs. My steel flywheel is listed at 14 lbs. With 75D poly tranny mounts the noise was horrible for a daily driver. Switched to Rogue tranny mounts and it still rattles but is way more muted and acceptable. I was surprised how much difference the mounts made.

I forget the brand, it was made it the UK, got it though Matt as Euroconnex. Its for my E63 M6, so not the same, but replaced a dual mass and I have zero NVH issues with it.
I *think* they make one for the M3 as well, but who knows if it will act the same.

Best thing I've ever done to a BMW was removing my brand new poly tranny mounts and putting stock mounts back on the car. Thing vibrated like a shiatsu massage chair. Never again.

I would, but then again I'm not the brightest crayon in the box.

My car is supercharged, and I'd like to make somewhere in the 500whp vicinity someday. I felt like I would have been really pushing the stock clutch at those levels.

If I was just doing a CSL airbox I'd probably run the stock clutch. The chatter can be a lot on a hot day after it's warmed up... I normally just hold in the clutch at stoplights, but the noise is enough for me to put in in neutral and let out the clutch sometimes.

I do notice the flywheel when I have it in sport mode and I'm backing up my sloped driveway however.... I need to keep the RPMs up and it's really easy to blip the throttle, and it's definitely quicker than stock... RPMS rise and fall very fast.

Lightened flywheels are really made for the track. For squirting from one corner to the next. I feel like there's limited use in a street car unless you qualify every day heading to work.

lightened dual mass flywheel is a thing, much more difficult than a SMF and less savings to be had but maybe the best compromise
