    Engine removal

Merry Xmas I’m calling on the s54 veterans.
im wondering if I need to remove the smg steering linkage to remove ONLY engine. I’m leaving the transmission in pulling the engine with a hoist driveshaft and everything is removed. Before I remove bellhousing and motor mount bolts I want to make sure everything is correctly removed let me know thank you!!

You mean the steering linkage-steering linkage, correct? If so it isn't specific to SMG.

If that's what you're referring to then yes it would be worth disconnecting for the extra room around the oil pan when you pull the engine. It takes one bolt to break it loose from the rack so that you can move it out of your way.

Thank you for such a quick reply! I’m referring to the smg shifter directly above the driveshaft

Oh ok. Your original post said 'steering linkage.'

If you're removing the engine and transmission together as a unit, you should be able to get it out with the actuator still attached. It extends probably 6-8 inches past the end of the transmission but it shouldn't really be in the way if you have plenty of room under the car to tilt everything.

If you're removing only the engine, you definitely don't need to mess with the shift actuator. Just separate the SMG Pump from the engine and get it out of the way. You should be able to leave the hydraulic lines attached and just strap it up off to the side somewhere.

I think it it way easier and less risky to pull off the front end and remove the engine/trans assembly. I'm not sure but you may be able to avoid opening up the SMG system. Only real pain is discharging the AC.

            I’m leaving transmission in
Thank you for such fast responses!! In theory I could’ve left the driveshaft in place & pulled the engine out (leaving trans in)?

All that is left is bell housing & motor mount bolts.
            Front end is completely off
Fuel lines, ground line, steering shaft, vacuum lines, headers off as well.
Every ac component is cable tied to passenger fender(in tact, no recharge needed)
power steering components are tied to driver side
Also smg compartments are as close to the fuse box area.
It seems like I have more than enough room to hoist. Any thoughts on this is it possible?

Yes. Just pull the engine out.
