    Engine serial number id?

    Hi all,
I have an 04 convertible. I purchased it with 137k miles. I'm currently in the process of replacing the rod bearings. To my surprise the rod bolts are the old style m11,v which leads me to the conclusion the engine is from an earlier year m3. Grok seems to think bmw may have installed an earlier production engine into later cars from their stock. Is grok full of it?

So, my vin ends in PK07902, the engine serial number is 60362481 with 32 6 S4 below it.

How can I find out if this engine indeed came with my car from the factory?

I do know the car has just over 200k on it. Of course, if the engine was replaced my a former owner, there no telling how many miles are on the engine.

I have taken the bearings out of cylinder 5 and the two halves look great with very little wear!

    Thanks
    Klaus

What is your full VIN? I will check ISTA for you. Look for date stamps on the head behind the VANOS, on the VANOS itself, and anything else that would have been swapped during the engine exchange. My head and VANOS are dated '01'. Here is some info

From an old Technical reference information bulletin. The attachments referenced do not show the newer engines. Sort of matches the one on my S54 engine. Vin LK60049 manufactured 05/01. Production day doesn't make sense. On the S54 engine the number is on the right hand side of the block...

      Thanks for the link!

There a yellow decal on the vanos. Second line ( below sach NR ) says 04. Haven't found anything else on the head. The engine is in the car. I will keep looking.
      Thank you very much BL92

Thank you. Is it possible to find out what Vin this engine used to belong to? It would allow me to do a in search and perhaps get a rough idea how many miles the engine has.

Officially this is not possible, I don't think BMW dealers are even able to tell you this.
But what the heck, just for this once, sure.

Engine 60362481 was installed on 14 March 2001 into chassis WBSBR93421EX20236
That car was totalled and ended up at the auction at 100,303 miles in August 2012.

Figure out roughly when the engine was installed into your car, and you can guesstimate the current miles on the engine.

With this info, I it is likely the engine in my car was replaced at around 120000 miles. . Which would mean the "new" engine has around 180,000 miles on it. This really helps! Thank you again!
