    Caulking The Timing Cover

    I’m stalling for time because I know exactly how this goes: I’ll start on the timing cover and end up pulling the whole engine for a rebuild

    I got the idea from here and here, and from what i just read, looks to be successful

    Started the job today, here is 1st glance










    Here is a close-up of the suspected area. It looks like it could be leaking down from the head gasket, though I did seal that section according to the TIS before installing the head








    After cleaning the area and hit the seam with compressed air, I noticed oil spraying out—coincidentally, from the exact spot where I removed the bolt for the vanos line swap




    I’d love to get your thoughts ( good or bad ) and any caulking tips you might have. I already bought the Permatex 'The Right Stuff' as they mentioned it's good choice

    The leak point is probably the top of the timing cover that comes into contact with the head gasket and block. F' it...try slathering some caulk on it. Maybe use the anaerobic stuff? If it keeps leaking then you know what needs to be done.

      Theres a channel on youtube that swears by the toyota gasket sealant. They build big engines with FI and it seems to work for them. If youre taking a swing, it might be worth a try. Ive never used it myself

        That's the anerobic sealant. BMW uses it now which has reduced oil leaks. I think newer model diffs spec the sealant, no gasket available.

            Toyota FIPG is absolutely the best. We use it in place of just about any other oil application gasket at my shop now.

              I just resealed by diff using Loctite 5970, but I forgot about FIPG and wish I had went with FIPG 1281 just for giggles (I've never used it before).

                How is Toyota FIPG going to find its way inbetween already mated surfaces. Wouldn't something like Loctite 518 be a better option?
