    steering rack rebuild questions

    Hey guys,

I'm having a bunch of bad lucks. While the front subframe was out for rod bearings I figured I would change the headers and put a blue tag rack (I'm working on my non-ZCP track car). The headers were a pain because they fit poorly and now the car is all back together but the rack's leaking - which will be the topic of this thread.

Fluid comes out where the steering column meets the pinion, and from what I'm seeing online it may be due to a bad pinion seal. I watched the 50s kid video on a full rack rebuild, and it looks like a major pain that's going to take me several days because I will find out I need to order a different tool for about every seal/bearing 😅

    video here: https://youtu.be/Gh22cQBrgb8?si=dzD6Jqkrje22d252

    Questions:
    - should I just limit the scope of my work to the problematic seal?
    - for whoever rebuilt a rack, what kit/bearings did you use?
    - how can I verify it's a real blue tag rack aside from the label (I bought it on fb marketplace and the seller said it did not leak, who knows what else he didn't tell me)

For anyone thinking about tacking this - a regular 22mm socket on a long extension worked prefectly to bank out the seal inside of the main body. Took 1 minute once I started with the hammer.

I knew it too good to be true. These damn teflon seals for the pinion. They are much thicker and being a beyotch to get in. Ruined one...another $60 kit.

Might have to just yank the pinion out and replace the o-ring of the rack in the car. Got time trials in a week and a half and I'm too old for last minute crap that will keep my up all night!

I can help… I have all the seal puller tools and the Teflon ring tubes that tighten them all before they go back into the rack.

Do you mind posting a pic of the teflon ring tubes? I was thinking about using pipe clamp.
