I ignored the tps light and got a blowout!

M3 vert here, only had it just over a year, came with 2018 general gs max tires with plenty of tread left. I did notice regulalry the tps warning would go off in the city and id check the pressure in all tires and it was off by maybe 3psi so i would fix that and then id just reset the tps

On the highway yesterday, it went off again, so i just thought I'd check at the gas station in a mile, then all of a sudden the car felt bogged down at about 50mph,and then bam the tire blows out. All within about a minute from the light coming on.

I'm now thinking of getting proper tps sensors on each wheel and installing an avin avant or something, it didnt make for a fun trip!

at least you're ok and probably very little, if any, dmg to the car. shit happens... over all, an easy fix

You ignored the stock TPS warning multiple times and want to replace it with an aftermarket solution? Not to mention the use of subpar tires. The solution seems to be better tires and a more thorough inspection when a TPS fault appears.

The aftermarket would be so i can see actual numbers, so i know if i need to stop imediately or have some time

Nah Man... when you see the TPS light, time is up unless and until some tire inspection shows otherwise. The tires are the main safety item on the car, arguably in front of brakes. They’re the only thing keeping the car on the road. I know TPS systems are an EPA-induced pain and we want to ignore them.

Ignoring repetitive TPS warnings and pressure loss has consequences.

Now go buy some real tires.

+ tread life and tire life is not the same thing. Tires also expire on time (5 to 6 years), regardless of the amount of tread left. Many people don’t know this. I didn’t know it when I started buying used cars. So depending upon the date code, you may need 4 tires, not 1.

P.S. Didn't realize the tires were 2018... that rules out age to me.

good point, mine came with tires that were 12 years old... first thing i did was new rims and tires. Adds quite a bit of "peace of mind" especially when driving ummm... spirited lol

General Tires - I’d rather shave with a rusty razor. If you have a Ford Explorer, does it have Firestone tires on it? Subtle hints aside, dump those crap tires and buy some Pirelli or Michelin tires.

You guys realize General = Continental and the GMax RS is a highly rated street tire, right? The tires he has are perfectly fine.

That blowout looks like a debeading unless there's a hole somewhere we can't see. The rim isn't the problem, I assure you of that. 3 psi low would not cause this or a TPMS light. If your light is on, you're way too low. For it to come off the rims, it would've had to have been at like 10 psi. You may have either hit something or the bead has been failing on these tires. If they came with the car, there may be a leaking patch some water wouldve revealed in 30 seconds.

Get good tires and don't blame the BBS rims you have. I wouldn't exchange them for chinese rims either.

There are little hand held scanners that test TPMS Sensors. Use that instead of wasting money. You may have damaged the sensor during the blowout but the tire isn't shreaded so you may be in luck. It takes about 3 minutes to test all 4 sensors. They send out a specific frequency to a reciever in your car. It's typically 433Mhz sent out. Each one must be programmed to the car. Receivers can typically recieve other frequencies but if a different frequency is used for one sensor, that may cause a problem, confusing the module.

Does mini = bmw? Just cause one company owns a another company doesnt make them the same company. Even if the tread looks identical, the compounds are likely completely different.

Such a great point... I actually bought a Mini thinking Mini=BMW just as a temp car while I swapped an engine into my M3. Wow was it a rude awakening. Mini's are trash cans on wheels.

Our cars don’t have TPMS sensors
