DIY: Smg harness - what is the trick to separating

So is there some trick to separating the multi pronged large round connector for the smg system? Trying to replace the motor and can't get this dang connector separated.

twist the outside then pull. It slides out as you twist and will release. when reinstalling, twist and push until it clicks.
