New wheels, what about TPMS?

I am thinking of buying some new 18" ARC8R's to replace my 19" Style 67's and would like to know what I need to do to keep my TPMS functional.
Apex offers a few different sensors and I don't want to get the wrong style. According to their chart (I have a 6/2004) I need this part no.:
36-2-36-798-726
However it also says "non-US models" next to this part number so I am a bit confused on that. They offer free mounting/balancing if I buy wheels/tires from them, so if the price seems reasonable I may just go that direction but I want to retain the TPMS and have it function properly.

TPMS works via wheel speed sensors on the e46, not via sensors in the tyre.

Ok, good to know, so its the ABS that's in charge. I wonder why the Apex guy pointed me towards TPMS sensors when the whole conversation was based on the fact the new wheels would be going on an E46 M3. Also their chart in that link shows that part number for an E46 M3 that is the newer direct style TPMS. Oh well, everyone can't know everything all the time.

I think one of my wheel speed sensors failed. Any tips on how to figure out which one it is before I head to google? I have a cheap obd2 reader, maybe that will tell me what tire is ‘flat’ according to the sensor

Cheap readers don't usually give you the specific BMW codes so it probably just says ABS fault or speed sensor fault, whereas INPA would likely give you the specific corner that is out. I haven't had one fail, but I would think it's more likely that a wire gets cut/pulled and not an internal fault with the sensor. You could physically inspect the connector and wires of each one and you might figure it out that way.

You should be able to find plenty of good tutorials using a multimeter with a google search.

Apex's list for the E46 makes it pretty clear the sensors listed are a non-USDM thing. Plenty of documentation around the FTM system on USDM E46 cars.

Confusing is the E9X cars where they switched frequencies mid-production. What the fuck that was about, I have no idea.
