    E46 M3 S54 Vanos pressure tests

Results from my Vanos tests carried out recently, (UK custom guage kit off EBay).
Its somewhat more thorough than the one I'd posted out back in 2016, where I had faults causing v low vanos oil pressure and Ive defined some simple benchmarks, this so that with others data, we could look at establishing indicators that can help us determine whether our systems are at full health.
Am keen to get your feedback (and data points) to work this one further up, please comment.

Here are the results, (graph & results table inc two Id done a while back).
Because my pressure has fallen a little, and the mechanical response times have slowed slightly, I think Im now ready for fresh Beisan piston seals.

The video shows the pressure reached 140 bars which is too high. Should be 115 bars max.

The graph shows the accumulator (not actuator as in the data table) seems to be fine with pressure slowly drop over 1 minute. Bad ACC would cause the pressure to drop very fast.

Edited: I was wrong: the video shows 114 bars which is OK, not 140.

              This is what I bought.

              Fitting: https://www.ebay.com/itm/M10-x-1-0-S...t/361110675174
              Gauge: https://www.ebay.com/itm/201L-158O-1...i/172993590870

Works completely fine, but does require you to remove the beauty cover, otherwise the gauge hits it when being screwed in. Maybe get an extension fitting so this isn't an issue.

I'm not sure what the banjo bolt specs are, but those are the exact listings I bought from (pulled them from my purchase history) and they fit the engine just fine.

Hi, in your table the pressure is at 107, are you planning to adjust to see if you can set it to 115? or you are just trying to assess seal life.

                        Hi,

I tested my vanos oil pressure and the gauge shows 35-40 bars. Tried to adjust the pressure regulator but response was minimal. Replaced both the regulator (11367838080) and regulating valve (11367830341) but the pressure is still the same. My vanos has been overhauled by BMW specialist using all of Beisan's spare parts.

                        Any ideas?

Was the vanos unit pressure tested on the bench before it was installed? If not there is no way to know whether the beisan seal job was succesful or not.

Are you chasing a specific problem or just doing the pressure test for fun?

No it wasn't bench tested (how can you test it like this?), I did the pressure test because after the overhaul it won't pass the vanos test. I 've covered 2.500kms since then.

This sounds like you have a bad leaky vanos piston seal; could be damaged seal during installation. Or not having enough oil supply from the head: caused by a blockage regulator (the one between the head and vanos).
