From what I recall they can't be adjusted in and out.
They are adjustable up and down, but if they've anything but brand new/out of box the threads are usually seized.
I suppose you could use a spacer of some sort to adjust them out. Of course you'll have to drill out the rivets if they are still holding the supports on.

Sounds like you're trying to install a CSL style bumper... I know the status gruppe ones had that issue. I have the same bumper and I have real Euro / CSL bumper shocks and they still don't fit that bumper.... they actually need to go in a little bit. they can either be cut shorter and rewelded or you can drill out the shock a little bit to relieve pressure push the bumper shock in.
I actually moved from a Kevlar to aluminum support due to my intercooler, so I got a pair of shocks and a plastic inner insert from a 3 series bumper and molded it to my factory bumper cover then installed the aluminum support
