    headlight washer delete info

after years of being mildly annoyed by the headlight washer system on our cars (not particularly useful, adds those ugly trim pieces to the front of the vehicle), i figured it was time to get rid of it. the headlight washer system is a supplementary add on to the normal windshield washing system ie it pulls fluid from the same reservoir so you can simply remove the headlight washer components and plug the hole on your windshield washer tank.
since i had to remove a lot of stuff to get to it, this was also a good opportunity to add onto this project by sizing down and relocating the current windshield washer tank.

Brey Krause makes a nifty little bracket that lets you use a smaller E36 washer bottle relocated to the drug bin but in classic BK fashion, their instructions left a lot to be desired so i figured i'd add some clarifying info. fair warning: this is a decent amount of work for an ultimately minor mod

    parts needed:

    - 61668370834 - E36 washer tank
    - 61318360459 - E36 washer fluid level sensor (E46 M3 washer fluid level sensor plug plugs right into it)
    - 61311369343 - E36 washer fluid level sensor grommet

    - you can reuse your E46 M3 washer fluid pump
    - you can reuse your E46 M3 washer fluid pump grommet
    - you can reuse your E46 M3 washer tank cap

    - ~8 ft of 16g wire
    - ~8 ft of 18g wire

    - R9232 - Brey Krause washer relocation bracket

    - 51138208679 - E46 M3 left side non washer fluid lower headlight trim
    - 51138208680 - E46 M3 right side non washer fluid lower headlight trim

you have to remove the headlights and front bumper to get to the windshield washer tank and headlight washer system. there's nothing too tricky about removing them once you get access

old setup compared to the new setup
    - not much weight lost (~3 pounds total)
    - washer fluid capacity goes from 5.4L to 2.5L
    - whatever weight in washer fluid you want to run ends up being moved closer to the center mass of the car but higher up the center of gravity.
    - no dash lights from leaving the headlight washer plug unplugged

BK mount in the drug bin
    - the washer fluid hose you can simply reroute into the drug bin
    - the wiring for the fluid washer pump plug (16 gauge) and fluid level sensor plug (18 gauge) will have to be extended and routed into the drug bin
    - cut the plugs where they are, extend the wiring into the drug bin, and then reconnect the plugs to the new wiring (this is common sense to anyone that's familiar with wiring, it was not common sense to me)
    - the pass through hole BK instructs you to use is a tight fit to get all that through
    - there's a lot of play in the mounting bracket to accommodate for old and warped washer tanks, be patient and follow the directions on how to set it all up

    all bolted in and working!
    - a much tidier setup and now you can run the cleaner looking headlight trim
    - i chose to source new E36 parts, it took a fair bit of trial and error to get the tank to fit well, imo some work could be done on that bracket and how it locates the tank, but overall very pleased with how this turned out.

Looks great! I’m sure most e46 M3s don’t see a lot of bad weather nowadays (except for Obioban’s). Makes sense to go to 2.5l.

Yeah nice writeup. I deleted my res completely from my track car a long time ago for brake ducting, but never considered just using a smaller res. I cant use the drug bin space, but I'm going to try this in the original location with a custom bracket to not interfere with the brake ducting.

On my street car I also deleted the headlight washers but I just plugged the headlight pump hole and shorted the wire.

ah yes! i forgot to mention the washer tank relocation was just an extra mod since everything was apart to begin with.
good idea on shorting the wire, in retrospect that's the cleaner way of going about it.

Nice DIY. I was wondering since i have the SMG pump in that location, can the e36 tank be fitted where the emissions thing goes behind the headlight? I dont have mine anymore as i removed it.

the E36 tank might be a little too wide and tall to occupy the space that the SAP is in.
you could try the washer tank replacement from Chase Bays

Long overdue, Chase Bays brings a compact Windshield Washer Reservoir. 6061 aluminum, sleek design, 5 bracket options. Upgrade today

that's an even smaller solution, but that kit has no provisions to use an OE washer fluid level sensor.
my guess is that since the washer fluid level sensor is essentially an on/off switch, you could just leave it unplugged in the engine bay and get no dash lights. but i wasn't 100% sure about that and didn't want to risk finding out that's not the case. that tiny aluminum tank also might weight more than a plastic oe e36 tank if that matters to you.

Might be an idea to mount the E36 tank in the CSL bottle mounting location.

nice writeup, just when i thought I hjad nothing to do on my car this pops up. I already have the trim pieces under the headlight ready to be painted. Now I know I will do this at the same time!

How badly did the car shake due to balance issues from the snow on the wheels? 😂

Is it possible to install the "non-headlight washer" reservoir on a car with the headlight washer option? I'd imagine you can install the trim pieces under the headlights easily and plug the washer under the headlights and hose to the reservoir? (haven't removed the front bumper just yet) Can you remove all that extra nonsense since you won't be using it? Would this throw a code?

edit: I have a new Euro front bumper going into paint when the weather heats up and the only light on my dash is the washer fluid. Filled it up, the light went off and then I found a nice size puddle underneath the car. Upon closer inspection after removing the under tray, there's a nice size hole on the side of it. No idea how it could have happened. If I could delete this option I would opt that route.

if you're ok with leaving all the original headlight washer system components in place then you can just unplug the washer pump from your car (it won't cause a dash light), swap the exterior trim, and call it a day.

im not sure if the washer tank for non headlight washer and headlight washer cars are different/interchangeable though, you'd have to cross reference realoem
