Knowing when to replace the old fuel pump

Thank you for this. Mine went out this morning. Will be swapping it out with OEM tomorrow upon NDA delivery. Luckily she went out approximately 1 mile from the house.

Can you use the hidden display and see how much fuel remain in the 2 tanks?

That’s the internal check valve. Goes out early when cars sit and moisture in tank ruins it.

This makes sense. The guy i bought it from only put 1000 miles on it in 10 years.

I used INPA and a voltage meter for my trouble shooting. Already swapped out the fuel pump so she’s back to purring.

If you have not filled up the tank, can you read out the fuel remain in each tank either using the hidden display or INPA?

Just an FYI, the unit sold as "Delphi FG1659 " I received from Amazon is actually a reboxed VDO. Pretty sweet getting the OE pump for $300.

I didn't. That "pump" uses passive suction so there's not much to go wrong.

There is however some concern with “Amazon VDO” in some cases being made in a substandard plant compared to the other factories. Meaning depends where this VDO part is manufactured.

If your vacuum system is in good condition and if your car very slightly bounces at idle, it's likely the fuel pump slowly failing. I had this issue and once I replaced the pump, the car idled dead smooth. You can also check if the pressure is within spec to see if it's slowly failing.

Hmm I have had this in the last month and been wondering if it was the fuel pump. Been meaning to get my diagnostic laptop setup again with the BMW software. Any codes anyone is aware of that might indicate a failing fuel pump?

Mine failed without warning, though thankfully not on the side of the road. Parked the car one night and the next day it wouldn't start. Want to say I was at around 120k miles at the time.

This makes sense... over Covid I was advised to store my cars with full tanks of gas, since I haven't driven them... I did have them serviced last year and they were fine... I'll drive them this month God willing, E46M included... I'm not looking to replace fuel pumps and check valves for nothing... it already cost me a fuel sender unit in one car.

I can't remember the exact production date range but this was an issue that plagued 03s and possibly 02s. Same shit happened to me on the way home from work one day haha. The fuel light had just turned on and obc said I had about a couple dozen miles left and the car suddenly died.

There was a bad batch of fuel sending units which transmits the tank data to the cluster so you're fine. It's good that you changed the pump anyway.
