How quiet can we realistically expect our cars to be? Admittedly, mine is over 170k miles now, but I'm very OCD about silencing every interior noise I hear. I have replaced perhaps over 100 interior clips and have put felt in various places but I can never get the interior to be silent over speedbumps and such . How much of this is due to just plain old age? Are low mileage examples anywhere near modern car quiet?

Before you become too critical (like me) have you read reviews on some of the newer M cars? Apparently they are notorious for rattles. If everything is tight and secure, the e46 is rather solid but it's never going to be E-class quiet. How fast are you flying over speed bumps?
I have noticed that even tiny disturbances in wiring/cable routing, using clips without neoprene washers (oem), etc will cause a rattle and dirty door seals will squeak. Regardless of miles, everything can be tightened down, replaced etc to new levels. Sometimes going too tight will cause its own issues as will adding felt in the wrong places (if it interferes with clearance or allowing the clips to clip properly).

Mine with 180k is very quiet. I've replaced a lot of clips and added foam/felt to places though.
It'd be even quieter if I didn't have poly camber plate, diff and sub bushings and solid rtab bearings.DD: /// 2011.5 Jerez/bamboo E90 M3 · DCT · Slicktop · Instagram

My E46 is very quiet, one rattling passenger window against the exterior trim that I’ve been meaning to fix for years. Just needs adjustment from the outside through that trim piece. My 01 M5 is super tight as well. Haven’t driven too many modern vehicles extensively aside from fiancee’s new CX5, which is similarly quiet with no rattles. Otherwise most new cars I’ve driven have been rental cars which always feel like POS bags of bolts despite being pretty low miles and newish.
