The issue isn’t your DCAN cable or your INPA installation. On the E46 M3/S54, INPA doesn’t expose the actual VANOS test like you see in some of the non-M E46 videos. It can show live VANOS/adaptation data, but the functional VANOS test is normally done through DIS/ISTA or Tool32. (Nam3 Forum)
If you already have INPA working, I’d leave the installation alone. For the S54, Tool32 can access the MSS54 VANOS jobs directly, including reaction time, end-stop and leak/holding tests. The relevant PRG is mss54ds0.prg. (Nam3 Forum)
So you’re probably not missing a setting in INPA; that VANOS button simply isn’t available for the S54 in the standard INPA script.

From Google AI mode: the factory bolt total L = 19mmOriginally posted by JP1580 View Post- the 30mm in the picture: is it will enough thread length for the setup?
.
The factory VANOS oil line banjo bolt for the BMW E46 M3 (S54 engine) has the following exact specifications: [1, 2]- Thread Size & Pitch: M10 x 1.0 mm (Fine thread)
- Total Length: 19 mm
- Thread Length: Approximately 11 mm
- BMW Factory Part Number: 07119905175 (Listed as a "Hollow Bolt")
- Crush Washer Specification: Requires A10x13,5-CU copper crush washers (10mm inner diameter)
- Target Operating Pressure: The internal S54 VANOS system is regulated to a target pressure of 100 bar to 115 bar (approx. 1,450 to 1,660 psi)

Good copy on the pressure gauge.
Got this setup coming in any minute now.
I'm tracking the thread is a M10 x 1.
I checked the forum and didn't get confirmation on the external thread start to the flat part where the crush washer contact.
Looking for confirmation:
- the 30mm in the picture: is it will enough thread length for the setup?
- what is the cold idle temp pressure should be? I'm tracking the sweet spot I need to be at at warm idle is 1500psi -1700psi? Planning to get at 1600psi if I need to adjust it.
Will post a status update.

previous ans:Originally posted by JP1580 View PostCould a faulty / not adjusted VANOS pressure regulating valve cause this?
Tonight I ruled out:
- solenoid pack resistance is within spec (bought it from Beisan and they helped me troubleshoot it)
- the wiring harness is not shorting to ground.
that the wiring harness doesn't have a short
2. how do you know vanos pressure not built up? Must install a P gauge on the vanos banjo bolt to verify.

Heads up:
Just realized that there's a new file for the test (under page 6). It adds leakage.
I was using the file from page 1.
I'll run the new test.
Anyone know where to find a manual or video(s) on how to use tool32?

1. solenoids are clicking under test, so they got elect current ok, but nothing to tell if the solenoid valves are working properly. This is why using Tool32 to move the cams is the proof.Originally posted by JP1580 View PostNext steps is to pull out the VANOS assembly and confirm tabs are not broken. Update:
Ran individual solenoid actuation tests via Tool32 using MSS54DS0.PRG to rule out electrical failure in the VANOS solenoid valve block (coils, circuit board traces, connector pins, and DME drivers). I DID ask ChatGPT.
Procedure:
With key in Position 2 (ignition ON, engine OFF), I executed the following individual valve actuation jobs in Tool32:
steuern_evanos1_frueh_ventil (Intake Advance Solenoid)
steuern_evanos1_spaet_ventil (Intake Retard Solenoid)
steuern_avanos1_frueh_ventil (Exhaust Advance Solenoid)
steuern_avanos1_spaet_ventil (Exhaust Retard Solenoid)
Results:
All four jobs returned JOB_STATUS = OKAY.
Distinct, audible metallic clicks were verified directly at the solenoid pack for all four tests.
Conclusion:
The solenoid pack is electrically fully operational, ruling out dead solenoid coils, cracked circuit board solder joints, connector pin corrosion, or DME output driver issues.
Next steps is to pull out the VANOS assembly and confirm tabs are not broken. That's the only thing I can think of as to why it's not building pressure.
Oil level is showing full.

When I start MEDIA AS Toolset 32
- Under the ECU library, I select mss54ds0
I feel I may be doing something wrong.
I swapped the solenoid coil pack.
P0011 is gone.
P0014 is pending.
The car is still showing a misfire on all 6. I'm lost now.
I have the valve block and solenoid changed.
Could it be some trapped air?
It's almost 11PM. I'm not going to take the car out
Looking for someone to walk me thru the steps.
I checked YouTube university and fell short.

The test wasn't set up correct.Originally posted by JP1580 View PostDoes this works?
For Intake the top 2 command should be like these:
EVAN_SOL -10 (but your shows 52); the dme commands the intake to move to -10 deg but your test commands to move to 52. Double check if the right engine is selected.
EVAN_SOL 75 (but your shows 52); the dme commands to move intake to retard 75.
The same for exhaust, should be
AVAN_SOL -10 (your shows 20)
AVAN_SOL 55 (your shows 20)
You didn't use the software tool correctly.

I bought the car for a friend. He confirmed that the engine was retimed after Vanos rebuilt (the body and pack were not changed during rebuild)
Car ran problem free for 3 years since rebuild. Occasional CEL for old gas (coming out of storage) since he barely drove it. Ran beautifully after a fresh tank for the season.
These CELs are 3 months old

To me, it looks like everything is pointing to a bad solenoid pack * Intake Camshaft is Stuck in Retard
* The intake camshaft did not move at all when requested. It physically remained parked at the retard stop throughout the entire 5ms test window.
Most Likely Cause: solenoid pack
It ran great last night for the 5 min it was running.
I have a refurbished solenoid coil pack that came in a day or two ago. Plan is to install it and re-run the test.
I know it says that the Vanos test should be ran at warm temp but if the soldering pins are making contact at cold.
Can I run the tedt at cold (say after 5 min from startup) to confirm my suspicions?
Car is throws P0011 and P0014 after driving moderately hard.
