I recently corrected my friend's 2006 M5, and took some photos that I shared on IG, but since there's a detail sub-forum, and this forum could use some more content, I figured I'd post here as well. Maybe people will see this. Or not
Car has a little over 100k, and it was pretty well taken care of. He did have the front bumper resprayed, but everything else is original and there are no serious dents/clearcoat failure/defects.
I start with a typical car wash, but I use dish soap so as to strip anything on the paint. I used to also spray some iron-x type of decon products, but found them to be fairly useless if I plan to clay the car anyway. You can see water beading up - the car was already in good shape for its age.
Next, I clayed the whole car. Most panels didn't have much, but the roof was the worst:
Unfortuantely, I didn't remember shots of the hardware and chemicals I used, but I'll lay it out here:
I'm using a cheap 6" DA, with a 5" backing plate for more pressure - I prefer 5.5-6" pads versus 6.5"
I used Griot's Fast Correcting cream (compound) and a cyan blue hydro-tech (eurofoam) Lake Country pad. I chose foam (as opposed to MF) as I didn't need to cut the car down that much anywhere.
For the second, polishing step, I used Mother's CMX 3n1 which is a polish and sealent (CMX - sio2/tio2) on a seafoam green LC CSS pad. So the 2nd step was an AIO, but I stacked it the next day with more CMX.
Also, before compound/polish, I always treat all plastic/vinyl/rubber with protectant and let it soak in. Below you'll seee the front bumper where there's lot's of plastic, but also the side grilles, and all window trims.
Next, I'm going to show some BEFORE shots. Mostly, it's fine scratches/swirls, but some other marring like scuffs and waterspots/etching. All very common, and not that bad for a 2006 car.
