I believe the tiny ads (as I linked and also another poster) has all the functionality of the diag head. I thought a GT1 was the whole floorstanding machine containing computer, touchscreen, and diag head? The yellow doodad I believe is correctly referred to as just a "diag head".

Correct. The computer itself is tagged as Group Tester One. I wasn't aware the diagnostic heads could be used outside of DIS and SSS. I will need to play around with that.
I agree and that's why I have one. I have done so little OBD1 work and usually grab the GT1 when I do. The simple limitations of INPA on older cars, like the dme, didn't occure to me (or the necessary cable). I would have thought DME module connectivity would be no issue though (this is what he is after).
So you have one yourself. Ha funny
But again, you don't grap inpa or the GT1, GT1 still runs inpa, if you want, or DIS, or whatever.
Ok let me rephrase, I only have the GT1, so whatever software I need running, I need to hook up my GT1.
Although considering getting one of these USB to ADS cables, as it still allows me doing SMG bleeding, adaptation and stuff. Would keep the GT1 less used and no need to take it with me on holidays.

I had the chance to buy the screen and all accessories, but declined in the end.
What is nice is that with the tablet you can use the GT1 head over wifi. But it's terribly slow and only supports archaic wifi standards.
Oh yes, the head can be used outside DIS/Progman. Now I understand your earlier comments.
You just need to set interface = remote in ediabas.ini and correct ip addres/port, then configure your internet ipv4 settings to a static ip address within range and subnetmask to 255.255.255.0.
To run INPA/NCS/etc, DIS must run and set to the homescreen. Without DIS running, rest won't work.
I haven't really messed around with E36s too much, but don't you need an ADS interface to connect to most modules on those? Something like this: http://openlabs.co/projects/Tiny-ADS-Interface
Exactly. You can do much, but to communicate with all modules, you need an ADS interface.
To the OP, Dis may be the most useful in scanning, or maybe better is to have both it and inpa working.
Have you tried (or can you) your setup on another car to see if it's the software/hw or the car?
Bottom line, car is not starting right? So we don't know if the car module is bad or if the inpa/hw is the problem. Makes it hard to diagnose when you have more than one variable. Actually makes it nearly impossible. Anything you can rule out here would be mathematically helpful.
Troubleshooting be like, if you have one variable and it has two options, you have 50% chance. Two variable and two options, 25% chance. If you have more than two options at any stage, well you're screwed. Rule out anything you can.

So, today I set up DIS via Vmware courtesy of David Mc at Bimmerforum. Launched the software...all the cars are OBD2 in the menu...the M3 S50 is Euro. So, it seems that I have an interface problem and I don't have a laptop with a serial port...this is a nasty mess-up! Cursing big time!

I can see if my toughbook will boot off my usb ghost boot stick, then I could make you a hard drive image of it. That would let you order a toughbook and not have to load windows. It is the hardest to load computer I've ever encountered. It's bizarrely difficult. I've got a laptop drive you can have, I could just image it up and mail to you.
Anyway lmk if that would help. You would need a tiny ads cable linked above.
Someone chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, but Dis detects your car, you shouldn't have to choose it.
It boots. I have an 80gb drive here, it will work but the data is taking up 50gb.
The laptop is a cf-19 like this one below. I guess I was lucky to get one for $75 but this looks pretty good. They have an hour meter so you can ask the seller how many hours they have. This one has 430 which is very good, some will have 10-20k or more if they were police laptops. I usually like a better seller rating but I'll leave that to you. If you get a toughbook, make sure to get the drive caddy, power supply, etc. They're expensive separately.
The toughbook is really pretty cool and works perfectly for this application. One thing you usually struggle with is old laptops that have serial ports are slow and tired. These are much more modern, run fast for this software, small, and very tough.
Tiny ads works same as yellow diag head, just need serial port (not usb adapter), and who doesn't need a hardware serial port in their life?
No idea. All I know if I never used it. I guess there is a reason new laptops don't come with them anymore.
Don't know much about the tiny ADS interface, but if it does everything the yellow head does, than that's a fine alternative.

That's weird. DIS is DIS. Even if you just fire it up, without any cables connected/to any car, you should still get the same menu, with same selectable cars.
You just choose 3-series, E36 and DIS detects the model, modules fitted, etc.

It sounds like dis is not reading the car and is offering up the menu where you select manually. I used to get that when I had the wrong cable. Inpa worked, but not dis. Of course, I'm obd2

Yes, that's correct and when I select manual only OBD2 cars show up. I heard from David...he said I need to "use the set translator option to set the Translator to Fister."
