Wait...describe the problem a little differently...are your wheels just spinning a whole bunch or are you actually moving at around 20-25 mph when it craps out?

It almost sounds like clutch slip, as if you heated up an already weak clutch, so it slips. What rpm are you launching at? The S52 is a torquey motor, I would guess launch it no higher than 2800-3000rpm. If even that.
Although, a sprint then pause might mean a bad VANOS unit, as that is what happened to my friends M50TU for a little bit. I am not sure how the S52 acts when the VANOS goes out, but how many miles are on your car again?
Make sure your clutch isnt getting hot and slipping, and then I would look to other things. Good luck

my clutch is brand new. but vanos is pretty bad atleast thats what my freind told me i dont even know what vanos is, where can i get a new one and how do i know for sure its broken
I trust you broke in your clutch before trying launch practice? If not, you've possibly cooked it beyond repair. If you did then this is not something to worry about.

I said the clutch is brand new ! i know how to drive so i didnt burn it. i have 78k Miles
Don't stresss dude, I wasn't calling your driving into question...
I was questioning whether you broke it in for the necessary miles, because it was brand new. If you don't break it in before using it heavily (race launches) you can glaze it and stuff it for life.
You know this, so no problem, as I said above.

You can take him, because I guarentee they are not running 5.4 stock.
You have a lot of good mods. If he is stock, you will be flossing your car all over him. But I still wouldn't race for money. At the end of the race (which you will win by a lot), you can walk away knowing you could have had $500 whereas he will be happy you didnt bet. That feeling will be worth more than $500. Plus he probably wouldn't pay anyway.
But tell us what happens.

Well, actually they can. I am sure they are capable, if the guy knows how to drive. I have ridden with my buddy who doesn't launch worth crap and two other people in the car and it ran a 6.0 flat. I have a G-Timer and it is accurate. 14.7 1/4 @92
Not to trying to make an argument, and I know I haven't seen 5.4 on the Timer. But I would imagine it'd be pretty darn close without passengers and a good launch.

I believe that the 5.4 sec 0-60 on that car is achieved by running it up to 5k rpm or so and dropping the clutch. Magazines do that to the car and I'm sure subi is quite willing to in order to post those numbers, but I don't think too many owners would like to beat their car that way. I read an article one time comparing the wrx to the s4. The article stated that they did that. On a side note, they mentioned the wrx posted a slightly faster 0-60 with this method do to the s4 having more grip and thus bogging the engine too much.
Incidentally,
I raced a wrx two nights ago. 10mph rolling start: we were pretty close to even up to half way through 2nd gear at which point I pretty much crushed him (my car: '99 coupe/shark injector/CAI/supersprint exhaust).
