Does the MSS50/MSS54 DME store vehicle mileage??

Need a way to verify mileage other then cluster, does anyone know anything about the DME storimg mileage because i know the cluster can be tampered with and recoded. Thanks !!!

I have never seen any trace of mileage in these dme, so I would say no.

i think it does. I think DME has a mileage counter that records the mileage when a fault is set. In a swapped car without a CAN cluster, the engine’s OE mileage in the DME keeps increasing from the speed sensor input, so the mileage isn’t pulled from the cluster when the code is set.

maybe karter16 can look at the routine to see how this works.

to answer the original question. Pull the maf sensor connector and see if the mileage that sets the code matches the cluster.

this is my experience with an MSS54.

The mileage is also stored in the LCM/LSZ.

The DME can easily be cloned/replaced/adjusted so I certainly wouldn't trust it as a reliable source.

Thanks guys, i have a euro z3 m with s50 engine but the cluster was swapped to a UK spec with miles instead of km.

I tried to connect to the cluster through NCS expert and get an error. Dont know how else to connect because it does not have an OBD2 and the check engine light was an option that was not active on this car lol which is why i tried to use NCS expert to see if i can activate it through coding.

DME is not cloned, i pulled the bin and it was all original, never touched compared to other stock bins i found online.

Yep the DME certainly does have access to the mileage for recording in the DTC Freeze Frames. as you say - what I'm not sure of offhand is where it gets that from (e.g. does it store a persistent copy of it in the EEPROM, does it get it from another module, etc. I can certainly have a look at this. That said I'm not sure even if it does that it would be very useful from a forensics perspective as anything in the DME can be changed too. ZiMMies suggestion on the easiest way to check is a great one.

Okay had a look at this. The freeze frames get the mileage from either mil_km_stand or ff_km_stand depending on the origination of the error. both mil_km_stand and ff_km_stand are ultimately obtained from can_km_stand which is sent to the DME on the ICL2 CAN message. In short the DME gets its milage from the cluster.

Once it’s obtained, is it stored in the EEPROM? I suspect that the mileage counter in my HP ECU keeps increasing. The only input is a wheel sensor there’s no LCM and no KOMBI. I haven’t driven the car in seven years, so my memory might be a bit off
