How many steering wheels/seats must one be in possession of before it's considered hoarding? Asking for a friend...

I have a couple intake manifolds, a wiring harness, some headers, some Dinan strut bars, like 5 transmission mounts for some reason, two left axles, throttle bodies and that's all I can remember right now. I still have non M E46 stuff too just in case. My wife tries to get me to throw it all away at least once a month. She also tells me to sell the car. I'm not ever going to be in that, "I should've never sold it" category. It'snot hoarding, you just never know what you might need.

Same... At least that's what I tell my wife LOL

I've been sitting on a BNIB Vorsteiner V2 CSL front bumper and OE CSL trunk, along with a bunch of other miscellaneous parts. Just off to the corner collecting dust.

Mechanicals will be available for a long time still. Anything to keep the cars on the road will be available as long as the cars are popular. If not originals, then some sort of OEM or aftermarket. Its the cosmetic stuff, like interior plastics and panels, leathers, trims, and rubber bits like moldings and gaskets that will be very hard to find very soon. Having several older BMWs in the garage, its next to impossible to prepare or buy things in advance. But some things that are model-specific glass for a car that was made in very small quantities, yeah - will be very hard to obtain in the near future. Try getting some Z4 M Coupe rear quarter windows. Or a Z3 M Coupe hatch. Unobtainium. You get rear-ended in this car - done, totalled.

I mostly keep spares because racecar, not because of availability.

I was going to keep a spare drivetrain - S54, ZF320 5 speed and a diff but decided against it. Might pick up an extra ZF320 because they are getting hard to find. I would like to have an extra ECU, MK60 ABS unit, VANOS unit & exhaust hub, and ZF limited slip unit because those parts are expensive and getting harder to find.

I have 3 extra sets of convertible floor mats, a set of 17k mile oem USA headers, and an extra set of oem wiper blade refills.

All the rest of the parts I have are waiting to get installed within the next 30 days as I do my subframe reinforcement.

                      I've started.

The price increases have been staggering on some items (i.e.; injectors) - doesn't bode well for the next 10 years.

Just picked up a set of the Bosch injectors (Chinese) as well as the intermittent availability had me worried. I should have my OEM injectors sent out for cleaning while my subframe work is underway.

Need some more MTF as well, I've got enough for one refresh is all, but hey its lifetime fluid...right..

Indeed, I bought some Deustwerks as Bosch has no clear timetable on their backorders and I need a set pronto for the SC removal.

                          Ahem.

What’s the 2026 consensus now? Windshield cowls, kidney grills are the new hotness. What are we hoarding now haha

Nothing. Tends to be the wrong answer for most cases as paranoia drives the thought process. The old we imagine far worse scenarios than what usually occurs. Not to mention I refreshed all the interior/exterior in totality back in 2018 and 2019 and mines a weekend driver. I don't have kids anymore, don't eat or drink in the car, and the car resides in a garage.

If you are track rat then I suppose it might make some sense since you're burning through certain parts at a faster rate.

I will say that I would have bought an extra set of fuel injectors back in the day if I had known.

Agree with you there. Mostly kidding and while I’m not personally hoarding parts (just have stuff laying around from the past that I’ve been too lazy to install or switched directions). So glad I did a full front end refresh about 2 years back though since it would’ve cost so much more to do it now
