There is the 540i drain plug which has a hex and socket. RealOEM says that it is the same M12X1.5. The stock one is not an issue though if you get a new one and use a good hex bit.

You gotta realize most guys are using hf garbaggio tools.
It shouldn't matter much. The new stock one seems to have a better hex than the original drain plug that came on the engine. That original one didn't look great when doing the first oil change, so it was worth swapping out for a new one.
dealership has a machine that will do this...you get a slightly bigger drain plug (07119904539) and washer (07119963201).
the machine will make the hole and then pressure on the other end ensures any metal particles/flakes are pushed out.
These aren't cheap but I use them all the time and they don't break like the crappy ones from the parts store. Highly recommend having in the tool box.
