    Stripped Oil Drain Plug

What are some ways you have fixed a stripped drain plug?

Is there one available that isn't hex/allen?

There is the 540i drain plug which has a hex and socket. RealOEM says that it is the same M12X1.5. The stock one is not an issue though if you get a new one and use a good hex bit.

It shouldn't matter much. The new stock one seems to have a better hex than the original drain plug that came on the engine. That original one didn't look great when doing the first oil change, so it was worth swapping out for a new one.

Buggered the drain plug itself or the threads in the oil pan?

The drain plug itself. The hex part rounded out.

Use a torx bit and hammer it in

I would guess T35 or T40 would be close

                This.

I’ve seen alot of variance on the quality/fitment of these allen bits. So maybe try a higher quality bit. I like VIM ones.

Avoid special purpose extraction tools as they are hardened steel and if they snap youre fucked. But the oil drain plug shouldn’t be that tight.

That doesnt work cut a slit in it use a large flat headz

That doesnt work weld on a bolt.

What I did was cut a slit and used a impact screwdriver. 2 taps and it came loose.

Look into a time-sert. It comes in a kit and you install new steel threads that are OEM size. Absolutely the best kit to solve this problem.

dealership has a machine that will do this...you get a slightly bigger drain plug (07119904539) and washer (07119963201).
the machine will make the hole and then pressure on the other end ensures any metal particles/flakes are pushed out.

Problem is the hex socket in the plug here, not the threads.

If you have access tap a T-45 and it’ll lock in and you can then remove it.

These aren't cheap but I use them all the time and they don't break like the crappy ones from the parts store. Highly recommend having in the tool box.

                              That's dirt cheap.
