Nothing lightweight enough to make the jump from 18" worth it. But I was looking at the possibility of having some 5x114.3 redrilled to 5x120. It opens up the options big timeOriginally posted by Nate047 View Post
There are a couple 17x9.5 ET 30-35 wheels out there if you don't mind running spacers

For sure. But the one that jumps out at me is the Titan7 T-S5 which in 17" are less than 17lbs each. You can also get 5x120 TEs, CEs or ZEs which would also be about 17lbs each for 17x9.5s. I wish Bimmrworld would offer more 17" sizes of their TA16 forged wheel.Originally posted by lvm3sm46 View Post

That should clear without spacers, no? I don’t totally understand why everyone is good with such low offset front wheels and the scrub radius steering feel that comes with it..Originally posted by Nate047 View Post

Not over the 996 brakes anyway. I needed more than 5mm of spacer with 17x9.5 +35 Arc-8, I think that wheel in 18x9.5 still needs 5mm.Originally posted by Bry5on View Post

Not sure if those would fit without a spacer or not. The rears probably would. But I do know suspension clearance in the front is an issue to consider.Originally posted by Bry5on View Post

I’ve got maybe 10mm of clearance with 17x8.5 et41 to the strut, so by my math 17x9.5 et30 should be within .5mm of the same back spacing (clearance to strut). My experience with steering feel wants offsets to be as close to stock as possible, which is 18/19x8 et47 or 19x8.5 et44 for the CSLOriginally posted by Nate047 View Post

If you’re driving for times, agreed. If you’re driving for feel in the canyons, I guess that’s up to the userOriginally posted by 01SG View PostI think the benefits of more rubber, and square, obscure any detriment of increased scrub radius. My steering improved, but I also changed tires.
either way the best method is to get the barrel as close to the strut without risking contact as possible for the best wide front setup. I’ve seen a number of folks running offsets that give up 10+mm of clearance inside, and unfortunately the 17” wheel selection really doesn’t help this issue. I’d love an OEM looking 17x9 et40-42 wheel to run a 255/40 or 45/17 front - I think that’d be a really nice balance of tire width/grip, unsprung rotating weight, clearance, comfort and scrub radius/feel.
Also worth mentioning that the taller sidewall is more progressive near the limit. This comes at the cost of some responsiveness but is part of the trade.Last edited by Bry5on; 08-13-2022, 06:58 AM.‘02 332iT / 6 | ‘70 Jaguar XJ6 electric conversion

Reviving this thread...
I have a square set 17x10 ARC-8's with 275/40/17 RT660's that are due for replacement. My original thought was 275 NTO1's but I see many mentions of running 255/40/17 vs 275. Is 255 enough tire for the heavy E46 M3 on track? A 255 RE71RS is roughly the same cost as a 275 NTO1, but my fender liners would probably appreciate the 255's up front.
My car is a street car with all the accouterments, but with Ohlins R/T and a bunch of other bits and bobs to make the suspension bearable on street, and good on track.

Smaller OD so the tire will get hotter which will cause more wear. I ran 255s on my E46 330 and they held up fine.Originally posted by S14 View PostReviving this thread...

i think you’ll be ok though. I’d be curious to hear if the RR660 is faster than an NT01. But a 275 660 is a little less than an NT01.

I have a 330Ci with an S54 that is my (almost) dedicated track car (weight: 3293#). I am running Bimmerworld's TA16 wheel (17x9 ET42) with a 255/40R17 tire. A 255 tire is certainly enough for the M3 chassis.Originally posted by S14 View PostIs 255 enough tire for the heavy E46 M3 on track?
