    SMG Actuator Tear Down

    Decided to disassemble a used spare SMG actuator in the interest of potentially rebuilding it and to learn more about how it works.

    Some photos below. But I have two pressing questions.

    Does anyone know what tool is needed to remove these rings?






    Also is it possible to get the connector for the GPS, remove these pins and insert them into another connector? Anyone have a place to order the connector?

    1. Looks like you need a pin wrench or a socket with four protrusions on it, like what's used sometimes for axle nuts. Did a quick search and apparently they're called spanner nut sockets? Could be wrong though. Anyway they look like this:

    If you just want to take it apart and don't care about destroying the nut, a cold chisel/flathead screwdriver and a hammer should get it off quickly.


    2. Most of the connectors on this car are made by TE connectivity. I've had luck finding some in the past by searching for "TE <numbers on connector>". But yeah it should come apart and let you slide the pins out. Guessing here, but looks like removing that pink bit should give you access the pin retaining tabs.

    Edit: Think I found the connector. BMW p/n 61138365927. TE 1-967584-3 looks super close too, but the p/n is different to what's stamped on yours. Maybe an updated (or non BMW specific) p/n? Should be easy to verify that they're the same with the product drawing: https://www.te.com/usa-en/product-1-967584-3.html

      Spanner nut socket as said, or modify a standard socket with sanding wheel.

            its normal. its a metal spring steel ring. The other seal is some form of rubber and has a taper to it.

                Hard to describe. Maybe i’ll shoot a video later. But there there two opposing hydraulic pistons. And two hydraulic lines going to each piston. The way I think it works is when wanting to move the shift lever fore/aft it will pressurize one side and remove pressure from the opposing side.

                There is a third hydraulic piston to rotate the selector rod.

                  2. How does a linear piston rotates the selector rod -- spring loaded on one side?
