    Do you mean 8 Degrees combined or per cam ?

    When I set the timing on S54 I do use the Double pin tool
    meaning both cams must be aligned perfect or other wise
    the second pin will never ever ever slip in but again I do
    the timing on S54 the way that both pins drop in on its own
    weight. So basically the timing is within ~1+/- or less.

    I believe the reason the OEM tool uses Single pin is to
    allow for not perfect timing meaning exact spot on with-in less
    than a 1 or 2 max combined but rather up to few degrees apart
    and if Check engine code show Vanos off range then Technician
    must re-adjsut the timing.

    My personal taste is 8 degrees is waay to much off but I assume
    the DME adaptation works this out...and who cares so long
    as the check engine light is Off..No wander one car feels
    different than other one...

      Per cam. +/- 8º is the DME's adaption limit.

      That does suggest that the VANOS adjustment limit could theoretically be increased by a good bit messing with the software, but in that situation if you don't get it spot on, you would increase the risk of bending a valve.

        Terra,

        Vanos adjustments are good via the software and playing with the
        timing is good to set the desired curve/power.

        Thinking of how good std car with mild tune and cat back feels in the
        lower rpm/s. Exhaust system is part of the vanos/power curve.

        The factory piston to valve clearance has good margin. I have another
        S54 engine for re-fresh and will Clay the pistons and set the timing via
        degree wheel and see were the limit is when the camshaft is off from
        the factory spec of course using the std 260 cams. Ehh will see if I get
        enthusiastic about that....that is a lot of work for just to find where the
        limits are on the intake and exhaust timing with std cams.

        With large cams and lift that is a must to find the limits

          Adjusting the vanos offsets will obviously allow you a little more advance/retard depending what you are shooting for.

I also remember a thread about the alternator problem with csl ecu software and your troubleshooting about this issue. would be really nice to recreate that thread. can't find it on google cash. thanks in advance.
