DIY: Stripped FCAB Bolt Hole Suggestions

Welp, thought I'd replace the FCAB's with new OE while I was doing some other suspension work and upon taking the bolt out for the front right lollipop it pulled half the threads out with it

What's the best fix for this? I tried chasing the threads, and when that didn't work running an M10x1.5 tap through but it still never gets tight in the threads.

Timesert is my go to when chasing threads fails. The doweled perimeter of the threads for these holes might be annoying to work around, but just take your time and you should be good.

I've never used a timesert before so I could be wrong but I'm not sure it would work in this case due to the threaded hole being inside a dowel. I think the dowel would interfere with the flange on a timesert.

I ordered some helicoils so I might try my luck with that.

Fair enough. I've heard of people having success with timeserts in this location. Maybe they drilled out the dowel?

Edit: looks like you've got enough room to play with: https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/m...b-bolt-pockets

I like timeserts more then helicoils because of their reusability, but either should work okay.

Thinking out loud here so take this with a grain of salt, but I wonder how deep the threads really are. For example on my non-M drain plug the same thing happened, but I installed a longer bolt and it torqued up since the rearmost threads are untouched and clean. Could take a caliper and compare against the bolt. If it is the case and it torques up, you will have the same clamp load on the joint as before

Ah good find. I'll try with the helicoils I ordered since a few in that thread said they used helicoils with no issue but if no luck there I'll suck it up and do a time-sert.

Might as well update this. Drilled out the thread, tapped new M12 thread, and put the helicoil in. Torqued up very nice, felt way more solid then even the undamaged threads in the other bolt holes. Will just have to see if it unwinds next time I have to undo the bolt.

Did you use red loctite on the heilcoil? Probably would have a better chance of staying in there.

Just grabbed a bag of 10 from a place local to me. $20 or so. m10x1.5x2.0D
drilled it out with a 10.5mm drill, stepped up in 0.5mm increments from 9.0mm

Then tapped with a m12x1.5 tap, wound the helicoil in with a small amount of blue loctite on the outside threads.

Took maybe 15 minutes all in.
